I heard a cut, "Flashlight," from this CD on a college radio station and had to track it down because of the sound-- a nostalgia-inducing reverb wash that I wrongly assumed to place the work back in the sixties. Once in hand, the CD struck me as somewhat uneven, but a few songs have the sort of hooks that just won't let go. (I made the mistake of listening to the CD repeatedly while driving solo for 12 hours, and my head now has a built-in loop.) The chord changes tend to be fresh, the melody lines ethereal. Period (that is, late-1960s) instruments such as a Mellotron are used to lay down a thick atmosphere that somehow can seem both gothic and sunny and cheerful. The best cut, to these ears, is New Room, with lyrics that come across as random snippets cut from a novel-- or old love letters.

How does a collection of songs so well crafted with a sunny California vibe quite reminiscent on some tracks here of late period Beach Boys (in particular, the gorgeous "Who Are You Now"), get absolutely lost in the shuffle such as this one has? It's pretty mystifying. I got this album from Amazon just yesterday and have had it on constant rotation today. Put this on when you want to forget pretty much any current music trends and revisit a warmer, simpler musical era, especially if you are a fan of Bruce Johnston's work with the Wilson Brothers, which a few of these tunes remind me of. But there's more than that sound here - there's some terrific power pop tunes as well ("Up Against the Glass", "The Reviewer"). Highly recommended and I surely hope these guys put out some new music in 2011.
