a suprising choice,

I got this cd because it was on sale, and was suprised to find that it was not really all that bad. You are sure to enjoy some of the tracks more than others, depending on how much you enjoy classic aternative rock. Their sound is nothing new, however they do their style well. I wouldn't recommend this cd unless you love plain alterative rock.

Though never receiving just fame, The Minus 5 have pulled off quite a few excellent albums. And this one is no exception. Some highlights are "Emperor of the Bathroom", "When it Comes My Way", "Worse", "Story" and "No More Glory".

Great CD!,

I am not quite sure what the first reviewer was talking about. I think this is a great CD, very much in the vain of Paul Westerberg, ect. I was very surprised how good this CD was, I have the split CDs "Because We Hate You/Let the War Against Music Begin" and I was afraid it would not be as good, but it sure was. I would recommend this to anyone with an open mind for solid songwriting and an ear for good old-fashioned pop music.

Haphazard lo-fi pop,

The Minus 5 is a side project of singer-songwriter Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows, aided by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and the Posies' two key members. The four, plus a few friends, clearly had a blast compiling the record, trading off unfamiliar instruments and playfully adding a cavalcade of sounds to McCaughey's "Automatic for the People"-flavored acoustic tunes. The quirky, usually irrelevant, contributions become a problem as, in nearly every song, a wayward piano ("Vulture") or electric guitar ("Find a Finger") or bass ("Algerian Hook") loudly intrudes on the pretty strumming and melody. Each listener will have to decide for himself whether the interjections are delightfully inventive or fatally annoying. Either way, the songs aren't all that strong, and the musical-chairs musicianship means that no great performances shine through. Don't buy "Old Liquidator" expecting anything at the level of the Posies or R.E.M. But sometimes low-impact fun is just what the DJ ordered.

No, really.,
This review is from: Old Liquidator (Audio CD)
This record should have had as much impact as Highway 61 Revisited, Revolver or Beggars Banquet. Scott McCaughey is a national treasure, and just as those other records did, managed to find a fresh take on rock using old approaches. The lyrics are dark, the sound is a little desperate. It proves that sometimes dissonance will resonate more sweetly than harmony. Best tracks: "All the Time," "Story," "No More Glory." Get this.
