PreSchool-Grade 1-- These words and pictures SHOUT! The very bold letters vary in size from large to huge , such that nine lines fully fill each right - hand page. Reading the words will force children to sing out loud the way a jazzy musical beat gets their feet a - tapping. The facing left - hand pages are filled with equally bold pictures of the animals whose calls readers articulate. The blank white space they occupy implies scenes without using conventional horizon lines or other visual cues other than the positioning of the creatures: higher on the page and smaller means further away. A fat felt pen creates the rugged outlines, and a scumbled chalky medium supplies color and adds to the sculptural effect. These are animals that exude character, some of the traditional farmyard inhabitants all firmly fleshed and open-mouthed or open-beaked, asserting individual oral prerogatives. And newcomers: guinea hens looking silly in small red party hats and a skunk chasing Old MacDonald off of the page, holding his nose. The score is included. --Kenneth Marantz, Art Education Department, Ohio State University, Columbus
