Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?Making a classic folksong like "Old MacDonald" look fresh is no small task but Souhami succeeds in this charming lift-the-flap book. Better yet, these durable flaps will withstand repeated use by small hands. Each flap provides a clue to help readers guess the identity of the animal beneath. Following it is a double-page spread of the creature crooning in its familiar voice. This book will also appeal to youngsters interested in the various modes of transportation, as Old MacDonald delivers each of the animals to his house in a different vehicle. A most unusual visitor arrives in a rocket. It will be a surprise to those just learning about animals but older children will appreciate the humor. The illustrations, painted paper collages and charcoal, are bright, bold, and uncluttered. The text is playful, as it zigs, zags, and circles the pages. This book works on several levels and is a worthy addition to most libraries. It is the most interesting edition of Old MacDonald available.?Dawn Ibey, Vancouver Public Library, Canada

From Booklist

Ages 2^-5. A lift-the-flap version of the old song shows a dapper Old MacDonald pushing, pulling, and driving a variety of vehicles. When the flap is lifted, the passenger is revealed--a duck in a wagon, a pig in a baby carriage, and so forth. The final passenger is an amusing change, arriving in a spaceship, with a "Beep Beep here, a Beep Beep there." Pictures are blocky paper collages with charcoal accents, and thick paper stock has been used for better endurance. Colors are muddy (the flap colors often don't match the backgrounds), and the usual farm setting is absent, but children will still enjoy quacking, mooing, and even beeping right along. 5.0 out of 5 stars A bold new take on an old standard., November 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Old Macdonald (Hardcover)
This imaginative book takes a traditional children's favorite and enhances it with bold colorful pictures and a big surprise ending. It quickly became a favorite for my two-year-olds--so much so that it became sort of a family ritual to make singing this book the last thing they did before going to bed each night. Simple but smart, this book is suitable for toddlers and for older kids, who will better appreciate the comical ending.

This is an amusing rendition of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" with flaps to lift for responses. "Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O And on that farm he had a..." A picture on the flap shows a partial red wagon, and when the flap is opened, there appears the whole wagon with a duck in it. Now the traditional refrain kicks in, "With a Quack Quack here, etc. Next, in a funny picture the farmer runs along with a baby buggy. When the reader opens the flap, there is a pig, "With an Oink Oink here," Children will sing along and a surprise ending makes this a fun book to share with an audience both young and older.
