Great book with loads of local history and photos, January 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Old Maud: The Story of the Palatine, Lake Zurich & Wauconda Railroad (Hardcover)
I purchased the bood from the author himself several years ago. I am the 3rd generation of my family to grow up in Wauconda and have always been interested in local history. "Old Maud" is a very accurate book. It has great illustrations and documentation of the LZP&W railroad. It also contains other interesting facts about the history of these three towns. The author lived in Wauconda and passed away a couple of years ago. His book is definitely worth the cost if you are interested in local history or railroads.

Old Maud, The Story of the Palatine Lake Zurich and Wauconda, November 20, 2004
This review is from: Old Maud: The Story of the Palatine, Lake Zurich & Wauconda Railroad (Hardcover)
Old Maud tells the story of modest, hard working people in small Northern Illinois towns who struggled to build and operate a short line railroad, a cultural and economic link to a better life. The book provides a lesson in true life, where despite determination, hard work, and even lives lost, some stories do not have happy endings.
For history buffs, the book provides connections to a lost past. You can find the names of key players in the small town cemetery, that literally lies adjacent to the lost railroad's right of way. The book's maps will show you where to find traces of the old line -- the raised roadbed and the foundation of the engine house, destroyed in a 1920 tornado, can be found today.
For those who remain skeptical of global warning, you can read about far more severe winters of 90 years ago, the likes of which have not been seen in the region for decades.
You'll enjoy Old Maud, "a microcosm of the macrocosm", a modest book painstakingly and lovingly crafted by its small town author.

Amazing amount of detail!!, January 25, 2010
This review is from: Old Maud: The Story of the Palatine, Lake Zurich & Wauconda Railroad (Hardcover)
This is a great book, with an amazing amount of detail! I only found a few minor errors in it (e.g. some wrong directions; "northwest" when it should have been "southeast", etc.). This book is filled with lots of little "side stories" that help the reader to get a feel for the era in which the railroad ran. You really get a feeling of how important it was because of the limited transportation of the day.
Lots of great historic photos and the maps were helpful, too.
