5.0 out of 5 stars Concept: Uninspirational; Execution: Flawless October 20, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
I love Bill Monroe and not only have nearly every recording he did, but also lots of cover albums. And I love Del McCoury. I've traveled to see him and his sons, and hopefully will again. But this sounded like one of those "phone it in" concepts. Del does a tribute to Monroe: "Really", I thought "How unoriginal." But I guess if anything cements The Del McCoury Band as the best bluegrass band since the Bluegrass Boys this does. Long time band mates Jason Cater, Rob McCoury and Ronnie McCoury are as good as they get on their instruments (see IMBA awards) and while Del may have lost a little in his voice as he ages, he still sounds great and that heart is still big. The playing is so perfect, the vocals are filled with such passion there is a joy that radiates though some of my favorite songs in the Monroe catalog. I've heard a lot of versions of Monroe tunes, and a few stand out but for a complete album this is will be held as a high mark. I swear some of these tracks nobody has done them this well since they were first conceived. This is a wonderful album whether you are McCoury fan or somebody who collects Monroe tribute albums. If you are both, like I am it's breath taking in its wonder. I think I'll listen to it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just good, pure bluegrass October 2, 2011

I really wasn't expecting to like this album as much as I did. I have to confess that I don't listen to much original Bill Monroe music as the recording quality from older times bothers me. But I was aware that Monroe was a really gifted songwriter, and this album really illustrates that. The recording quality is crystal clear and Del's voice really howls. With each successive DMB album, I worry about Del's voice--perhaps he won't be able to hit the high notes as he ages. Boy, was I wrong in that regard too. A good part of this album is him singing in that beautiful, goosebump-inducing "mountain tenor" voice. The songs are all great. I was a little disappointed that they didn't include a recording of Ronnie singing "Body and Soul" as I've heard them do in concert, but this album is so great that I can live for now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Always good January 25, 2013

I've been hooked on Del McCoury ever since I saw him perform 1952 Vincent Black Lightning on the "Down From the Mountain Tour." Great versions of Bill Monroe's music. If you like timeless bluegrass, then you won't regret picking up this release. However, if you're new to Del McCoury I recommend starting with "Del and the Boys", which remains my favorite Del McCoury album.
