It's fun to experiment.

Try a slice of cheese, a slice of ham and an egg for a wonderful egg sandwich.

We are very happy with our Pie Iron. We first saw one when we were sitting around a camp fire with another camper who had one. We've tried cooking several different things using raw biscuit and pie dough and the standard bread slices. So far, the bread slices work best because the pie dough tears up when we try to place it on the hot iron. The biscuit dough is also difficult to handle and easy to get too thick, but we are still working on that one. It's fun to experiment. We do use liquid butter to squeeze into each round before putting the bread slices in. Also, we like this style because the two sides are ATTACHED and do not come apart. It's easier to handle because of that.

This item adds a great deal of fun to any camping trip. We have made both cherry and apple pie but may try making a pizza next time. It is fun for both children and adults.

I first encountered pie irons at a square dance camp out. What fun it was to eat all of those delicious pies, hot from the fire. My son had just bought his first home and had a nice outdoor fireplace, and I knew I had to get him one. I had just days to find one before traveling to California from Arizona. No local stores carried them, but I found this one here on Amazon, ordered it, and it came the day before Thanksgiving, just as expected. What fun we had making pies. I have since bought myself a cheaper aluminum square version at a local chain store. Not half as good as the iron one. So, if you are going to buy a pie iron, buy iron! I like the round better than the square version, as there is no bread crust to deal with. Try a slice of cheese, a slice of ham and an egg for a wonderful egg sandwich. Great way to start the day camping. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys camping, or has an outdoor fireplace, or fire pit. The possibilities are endless.

Unfortunately, in this case, the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts, nor equal.
The cast-iron plates are wonderful. Pre-seasoned, even heating, tightly closing. This part of the overall item deserves 5 stars. It makes great sandwich pies.
The handles, on the other hand, deserve between zero and one star. There are two wooden handles, loosely attached to the ends of two drop-forged steel rods.
When you close the press correctly, the handles don't align properly (they spread out.) The wooden handles nearly fall off, especially when flipping. A real hazard there.
The handles are also really hard to deal with at the 28 inch length. I guess if you are working outside over an open fire, this would be ideal, but indoors, definitely not (unless you want to use it in a fireplace.)
If Old Mountain would use better quality handles, this product would be much better. As I said before, the cast-iron plates are great, but the rest is nearly useless.
If you are really handy, you could try to make yourself a new set of handles for this press and you may have better luck, but as designed, I cannot recommend it.

The irons are nice but they were just thrown in the box and brown paper was wadded up and thrown in also. In shipping one of the clips that hold the iron handles together disappeared. Also the irons were a little beaten up with shipping but they work find.

Worked similar to the old one I had for yrs. No problems except for the handle ends get a little loose.

Yes it has it's flaws, especially if you are using it on a home stove, but the results are fantastic.
We had a much cheaper (aluminium) one when I was a kid and I remember coming home from school for lunch. I'd make myself all maner of "pies".
It hadn't even crossed my mind in the ensuing decades that these things still existed, but once I saw this I had to have it!
Love it! I made three sandwiches the day it arrived! I did make a mess with one due to poor planning on my part - too much cheese which oozed out and all over the stove - but with some practice and experimenting I'm looking forward a lot of good snacks and meals out of this!
Think I'll go make a Peanut Butter and Banana pie for a snack! Or maybe some cream cheese and strawberry jam for a sweet treat!
