Book Description

January 1, 2003
"The Old Rose Adventurer" is devoted in large part to the classic once-blooming European shrub roses. There are also chapters on the old Oriental repeat-blooming shrub roses and climbers both European and Oriental. The author has examined original material from France, Britain, and the U.S. to obtain not only the fullest descriptions and cultural directions ever compiled for these delightful roses but also the most complete history of the development of each group---including in many cases remarks by the original breeders themselves.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This encyclopedic reference by garden writer and horticulture historian Dickerson is devoted primarily to once-blooming old roses (and, secondarily, to repeat-blooming old shrub roses). As in his previous book, The Old Rose Advisor, which covered only reblooming old roses, Dickerson provides lengthy historical profiles of cultivars, species, and hybrids. Each entry includes quotes from primary sources, such as nursery catalogs, garden periodicals, and belles lettres. The author also resurrects classes of roses (such as mossy remontants and agathes) that were once described in early rosarian literature but have been long since forgotten. There's scant cultivation information hereAreaders seeking a "how-to" guide will need to turn to other sources, such as Rayford Reddell's The Rose Bible (Harmony, 1994). Still, this book should captivate expert antique rose fanciers and horticultural historians. Essential for all libraries with large gardening collections.ABrian Lym, City Coll. Lib. of San Francisco

4.0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive review of the once blooming roses, October 21, 1999

This review is from: The Old Rose Adventurer: The Once-Blooming Old European Roses and More (Hardcover)
Brent Dickerson's announcement of this book preceded its release by far too long. This is an essential rose book for the serious heirloom rosarian. Like its illustrious predecessor the book is divided by class. Roses are recorded with a separate section of illustrations, not all roses are illustrated. Rose rustlers will find this useful in trying to identify once blooming found roses. With so many roses extinct, this tome gives the reader a sense if what has been lost. Hving covered the once and repeat bloomers, what is left for Brent to cover but hybrid teas from La France to Peace??
