4.0 out of 5 stars Charming Characters, April 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A romance without the lurid details so common today. The characters are wonderfully interesting. I particularly like the twins. The book (from an estate sale) fell apart and pages disintegrated as I read it, so I am thrilled to find it available on Kindle so I can read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed every word, October 7, 2010

I found myself reading every word of this novel and I rarely do that. I usually find myself skipping lengthy descriptive passages of clothing & room settings in many books. Not this one. This was a great "free" find on Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Prose, July 20, 2011
This review is from: Old Rose and Silver (Kindle Edition)
Beautiful prose. I found myself stopping to reread passages that were so stirring that I could not move on. If you are a musician, the vivid description of Rose accompanying Allison on his violin..her experience...breathtaking, really.

I enjoyed this work of Myrtle Reed's so much that I went on to read her other books and to learn more of her life.

I had first searched for OLD ROSE AND SILVER years ago after it was mentioned by a favorite author, Jan Karon. Then, later, there it was in Kindle format, and free!

Published in 1909. Fiction. About Rose and her aunt, and the neighbors who are part of their lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, September 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Old Rose and Silver (Kindle Edition)
The novel follows the lives of Rose and her widowed Aunt, Madame Francesca Bernard, along with young visitor and cousin Isabel, whose lives are changed by the return of an old friend and neighbour Colonel Kent, and his grown son, Allison. Other characters that help shape their lives in significant ways are the Crosby twins, unconventional and uninhibited youths that set society at naught, and an unconventional doctor who specializes in the impossible. Through the limited "wide-scope" descriptions the reader is not sure of the historical setting or even in which decade it's set, but it helps to understand the focus of the story; after all it's about their own little world, and how their own hearts and lives fit together in the tight confines of their town, their garden, their friendships and lives. I wanted an old-fashioned romance where there is love, sacrifice, friendship, and joy. Selfishness is frowned on. Flowers have meaning. I loved this completely.
