A book highly recommended for any library collection,

These 'chopper' bikes are anything but ordinary: indeed, they're a pick for those serious about biking. OLD SCHOOL CHOPPERS: NO-FRILLS BIKES FOR REAL BIKERS offers up old versions of Harley-Davidsons, Indians and others. Many were dreams that builders brought to life, customizing originals until they were nearly unrecognizable. Numerous color photos depicting all angles of the bikes are accompanied by technical specs in a book highly recommended for any library collection with motorcycle fans as patrons.

Going over ideas for a bike build, and trying all sorts of sources for something that fits the feeling. There are more than a few good looking bikes in this book, and all the best ones, at least the best in MHO, all seem to come from the same shop. OSC is a great read if you want to just check out some beautiful customs; the selling price was worth it for the photography alone.

Alan Mayes has done a brilliant job with this book on old school choppers. He introduces the right of passage from Bobber on to Chopper's. The historical perspective of who, how and why are covered well and illustrates the birth and progression of the art and science of building such machines. Prolific photos abound that show the bobber/chopoper genre in all various time periods. But as the book title suggest, it focuses on Old School, therefore, tending to follow how it was done in that time frame (ie. 60's and 70's). But do not worry that this is a history book, it certainly is not. Only the first 20 pages cover the history, the remaining 160 or so pages cover numerous builds. The bikes are Harley's, BSA's, Truiumph's and Indians. Old and new.
The bikes are gorgeous and well photographed and a tribute to their builders. There are no radical new bling choppers in this book, its OLD SCHOOL... if that's what you like, its a great book. |
