Truly "old scool",
By SCDay "SCD" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Old School Hot Wings (Audio CD)
A good amount of Jimbo's other albums are "plugged in" -- this is, as the name implies, an "old scool" album. It is a great album. Mathus has this music in his blood. These aren't retreads of old songs -- they are fresh versions by a great Mississippi musician deeply immersed in the music and its legends.Highlights include Voice of a Porkchop, Rugged Old Cross, and Ben Dewberry's Final Run.

4 1/2 - Jimbo At His Best!,
By Misterian (Sandy, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Old School Hot Wings (Audio CD)
I have all of Jimbo's CDs, and enjoy them all to varying degrees, but this is the one I seem to come back to most often. It is definitely a back-porch affair, that never takes itself too seriously. The songs are warm, playful, and upbeat. Even though it is an entirely acoustic album. it is possibly his blusiest recording. There is plenty of slide guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and even kazoo. Of course, Jimbo's vocals are masterful throughout. The songs are strong from start to finish. It's definitely a great album, maybe his best.
