5.0 out of 5 stars Bocephus For President July 10, 2012
By Tony G
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just got this new CD and LOVE every track. I saw him perform "I'm Gonna Get Drunk And Play Hank Williams" with Brad Paisley on the CMT awards and am still shocked I'm not hearing it on country radio. After listening to this album I realize that most tracks probably won't get much airplay due to the political correctness of current radio. Beside the fact that the music that passes for "country" these days is mostly whinny fluff. From the first track "Takin' Back The Country (with a little vocal from Hank Sr. thrown in) to the last "I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink (Featuring Merle Haggard) there's not a bad track to be found. He sticks it to ESPN and Fox & Friends on "Keep The Change" and sings from the heart what a lot of people are thinking with "We Don't Apologize For America" which we find our leaders are doing way too much of these days. Keep on playing Hank and America will keep on listening. Bocephus For President!

CD Review HANK WILLIAMS Jr - Old School, New Rules (2012)

As most Country music fans will know, Hank Williams Jr. is the son of the great Hank Williams Snr. He began his career by singing his fathers songs and imitating his style. Later he developed his own style which was a blend of Country, rock and blues. He enjoyed a great deal of success in the 1980's with songs as "Family Tradition", "Dixie On My Mind", "All My Rowdy Friends", and the song that raised a few eyebrows "If The South Woulda Won".
He has been described as an `outspoken, controversial rebel redneck with a gravely voice' (I think I agree with that description). I saw Hank Jr. perform in the UK in 1980; he was contentious then and is even more so now.
This album "Old School New Rules" is definitely controversial, although I wonder if he really feels so strongly about the topics he sings about, or if he just enjoys the immense publicity his songs generate. There are12 tracks, many written by Hank himself.
The opening track "Takin' Back The Country" reminds me of the tune "Mind Your Own Business". It contains the words `Well it used to be easy, get a place, build a house / Now the EPA said no, that's the home of the blue mouse / Don't tread on me, don't you tread on me / We're gonna use some common sense / And we're gonna take back our country!' it continues in similar vein with the line `Hey Barack, pack your bags, head to Chicago'. .....(This album came out prior to the recent US elections, so I am sure Hank Jr. will not be pleased that President Obama has been re-elected.)
"I'm Gonna Get Drunk and Play Hank Williams " has a traditional Country backing, enhanced by Brad Paisley's guitar playing. The story tells of a man with a broken heart who is sitting in a bar drowning his sorrows to the sounds of Hank Williams Snr. on the jukebox. Many lines from his father's songs are woven into this tale of woe, including "Lovesick Blues", "Your Cheatin' Heart" etc.
"Three Day Trip" A Tex-Mex feel to this track, tells of a man who is taking a lady away for a romantic weekend. At great expense he wines and dines her, but she drinks too much and passes out; so alas, instead of a night of passion he has to put her to bed. However, the night is still young so he goes into town to find a lady who will stay awake till the morning light.
"Old School" A slower paced number where he reminisces about the old days and mentions the famous stars he met.....Johnny Cash, Marshall Tucker Band, Dolly and Jerry Lee. "I learned a thing or two / From some pretty good teachers / My education has served me well /One look at me and you can tell my music's true / A class reunion of the blues / I'm from the old school". I think what he is trying to say is that many of today's acts have undeservedly found fame.
"We Don't Apologise For America". A dramatic song, but perhaps more like a party political speech than a Country song. "No nation's lost more men than Uncle Sam / From the fields of France, to Iwo, Afghanistan / Though freedom isn't free neither is liberty / It ain't the protestors and politicians / It's the 19 year-olds on dangerous missions / Hey, we don't apologize for America / Hey Obama, one more time / When you runnin' down our country man / You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me". Hank is joined by Merle Haggard to sing a few lines from Merle's 1970 hit "The Fighting Side Of Me"
"You Win Again". This 1958 Hank Snr. number is given convincing treatment by his son. Musically impressive.
The song with the most unsavory title goes to "The Cow Turd Blues". I am not quite sure what this is all about, but it could be `Don't stir up trouble if you are not prepared for the consequences'. Much to my surprise he is joined by Trace Adkins on this song.
"Who's Taking Care Of Number One".This time I think his gripe is that the U.S. administration is giving financial aid to other Nations and not doing enough to help its own citizens, however Hank's opinion is "I don't give a damn about Iran / Or the Middle East / Though they've been fightin' for about 2000 years / And we send billions to Mexico and Zimbabwe / Well, I think it's time for America to watch her own store / So here is my question to everyone / Who is taking care of number one?" (my view is... sometimes it is beneficial to befriend a Nation with aid rather than become its enemy)
"Stock Market Blues" . tells of a guy who wants to get rich and live a life of luxury. He borrows cash from his Mother-in-Law (would you believe it ?) to play the Stock Market. Alas, a fool and his money are soon parted, so he has the unenviable task of breaking the news to his wife's mother......will it end in a divorce ?
"Keep The Change" . This is yet another song of Hank's views. "I'll keep my freedom / I'll keep my guns / Keep the government outta my business / And y'all can keep the change / This country's sure as hell been goin' down the drain / We know what we need / We know who to blame / United Socialist States of America / How do you like that name? / I'll keep the USA and y'all can keep the change" Harsh words indeed !
The album concludes with "I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink" . Featuring Merle Haggard. (Merle had a big hit with this song in 1980) Musically good and their voices blend well.
If you like controversial songs about politics, patriotism, gambling, drinking, cheating and drunken women then this is the album for you.

More good country from Hank. There were a couple "filler" songs that are worth skipping over, but not disappointed at all with the album overall.
