4.0 out of 5 stars "The" Old School
A well recorded rarity. A collector's item at the time of its original release on vinyl. If you like Dave Cousin's voice up front on the Strawbs recordings you will love this simple acoustic recording of some of the band's most memorable titles.

Cousins in his between Strawbs period taking an acoustic approach to a wide range of primarily older Strawbs compositions with Willoughby in lead guitar role. Strawbs and solo fans will not likely be enamoured of this recording the power is lacking in these re-interpretations with one noteable exception. 5.0 out of 5 stars aged well, September 24, 2002

When I 1st saw this album in 1980 it was the album cover that got my attention. That has changed and I prefer the original one. In Canada the cover was a sunny yellow with a pencil sketch of a young guy in a jean jacket with an acoustic guitar. It looked a lot like what I remembered of school. The acoustics and vocals were pretty much as expected except perhaps for the almost medieval edge. Always did enjoy lyrics that do more than rhyme.

This album has a tendency to grow on the listener. A number of my friends have added this one to their collection after asking on more than one occasion what they were listening to. It could be Mr. Cousins passionate vocals or Mr. Willoughby's fine and clean guitar stylings...

There is an underlying sadness about this album that seems to have something to do with aging. It could be the way the passions are kept in check by the acoustic format but whatever the reason this album has aged very very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it!, May 23, 1999

If you live anywhere other than London you should buy this CD. Dave and Brian still perform, for fun and beer money I suspect, but not often outside London. Lots of great tracks here in a strictly accoustic setting. If you do live in London, catch them at the Troubadour, Earl's Court.

Strawbs and solo fans will not likely be enamoured of this recording the power is lacking in these re-interpretations with one noteable exception. The breathy in your own room vocal of "I have been my own worst friend" is an audiophile gem and worth the price of ownership for many fans. Cousins afficianados should really be lobbying A & M for a re-release of "Two Weeks Last Summer" featuring Miller Anderson, lead guitar (formerly of Keef Hartley Band, Hemlock, Overdog, Savoy Brown blah blah blah). For a more creditable outing from these two, with the Strawbs supporting, try and find "Don't Say Goodbye"
