Book Description

Old School is a collection of fourteen short stories.

Why Old School? Bette Davis famously noted that "Old age ain't no place for sissies." In these stories the protagonists may not all be old, but ain't none of them young anymore. They're past the solipsism of youth, that grandiose narcissism that lets the young imagine the world as a stage devoted to their glories. Every character in Old School knows that life isn't a stage, it's a ring. And you'd better learn to take a punch, because life is the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. You might land a shot here and there, but you are gonna get your ass beat and, in the end, you're going down for the count. Life is however-many-billions and 0, and each of us is just one more digit on the wrong end of that equation.

PRAISE FOR OLD SCHOOL:

"Sometimes O'Shea writes with this savage and wild masculine abandon - guns and broken fucking bones and toothbrushes jammed into the backs of skulls and a muscular but jaded outlook on the vagaries of mankind and the cruelty of fate. And other times, he writes with such poise, such perfect emotional rapport that you feel a horror of intimacy - he makes monstrous criminals human and understandable and the average everyday schmucks seem like demons in human skin. He can swing from erudite to profane, from the sublime to the perverted, like it ain't no thing. I've read thousands of books, no one writes like Dan O'Shea. He's a major fucking talent. The world will know." - John Hornor Jacobs, author of SOUTHERN GODS and THIS DARK EARTH
"Dan O'Shea is a master of characters filled with grit and fascinating depth. Old School grabs you by the gut with the first story and roars to the end. I couldn't stop turning that pages and I'll never think of Girl Scout cookies in the same way ever again." - Joelle Charbonneau, author of SKATING AROUND THE LAW, SKATING OVER THE LINE and MURDER FOR CHOIR

"Dan O'Shea's writing hits hard. The characters in OLD SCHOOL are mad, bad, and dangerous to know. But they are also filled with genuine longing, desperation, and sorrow, making them resonate off the page. No matter how far they've fallen, there's always something more to lose." - Hilary Davidson, author of THE DAMAGE DONE and THE NEXT ONE TO FALL

"Whip smart and razor sharp - these stories are fast, mean, and true to the very bone. Dan O'Shea can write." - Lou Berney, author of GUTSHOT STRAIGHT

"Dan O'Shea infuses his writing with a grounded humanity that gives OLD SCHOOL a serious punch. Tales of men and women from the far side of life, with too many years and too many miles on them. These are powerful stories of doing the right things for the wrong reasons, of sacrifice and desperate measures. From the short, quick jab of ABSALOM to the slow and sad SHACKLETON'S HOOCH, these are stories you're not going to forget." - Stephen Blackmoore, author of CITY OF THE LOST

"O'Shea is my kind of writer; hard and honest, fast and funny. Old School is full of elders who demand your respect, at the point of a shotgun. The characters talk like real people, and make decisions like desperate people; meth heads, killers, drug dealers and gigolo's, this books got it all. After reading this, I'll always think twice before trying to knock over a Girl Scout." - Jay Stringer, author of OLD GOLD, coming in 2012 from Thomas & Mercer

The stories in OLD SCHOOL ain't the kind to feature sexy, badass twentysomethings, who -- for all their bitching -- could fit their worries and belongings both into a backpack and still leave room for a sixer of PBR. OLD SCHOOL is full of folks with jobs, with debt, with families, with regret; folks with shit to lose, and heights from which to fall. That makes them real. That makes them desperate. OLD SCHOOL is tough and funny and honest and brutal -- and on occasion, all at once. In short, it's not to be missed." - Chris F. Holm, author of DEAD HARVEST and 8 POUNDS

About the Author

Dan O'Shea is a Chicago-area writer who's spent almost thirty years writing about the tax code. That's enough to make anyone want to write about killing people. His first two novels, UNTO CAESAR and THE GRAVITY OF MAMMON will be published by Exhibit A, the crime imprint of UK publisher Angry Robot, in 2013 and 2014. His stories have appeared in Crime Factory, Needle Magazine, Shotgun Honey, Black Heart Magazine, the Discount Noir anthology and the Noir at the Bar anthology. He is represented by Stacia Decker at the Donald Maass Literary Agency. His short fiction collection, Old School, is available now on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute rip-snorter of a corker of a book March 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
My usual taste in books run to dragons or spaceships, but every now and then I need something more true to life. And Old School fits the bill perfectly: grittily realistic with main characters that are gripping because they're full of flaws. They range from loveable rogues, arseholes you can't help but root for, through to despicable villains but each page is compulsive reading. Most of the stories aren't a happily ever after, but unfortunately life isn't always like that.

I read Old School cover to cover the evening I downloaded it. Each page crackles vibrantly, compelling you to read and read and read. It's over far too soon, because these stories are pared to a laser-like focus... there's no purple prose to distract you, it's all hard hitting action. He's got some other books coming soon, and I'll definitely be snapping them up.

As an added bonus, Dan O'Shea has uploaded mp3's of him reading quite a few of the stories to his website. I'm saving them for when I need a carrot to reward myself with. And the suspense is killing me - even though it's only been two days since I read Old School. Audio books are good, but audio books read by the author themselves tend to be excellent, as who knows the story better, and where to make it expressive, when it should read fast so you hang onto your seat in fear?

When things go wrong for the main characters whether it be grisly or gory he handles perfectly - enough detail to hook you, but not so much that it drowns out your own imagination... making you an accomplice since the special effects in your head are much more effective.

Definitely a name to watch - I've added his website to my RSS feed, so I don't miss any other gems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old School Review February 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
"Old School," the first compilation of short fiction by writer Dan O'Shea, is filled to the brim with pieces that are as hard hitting and visceral as they come. As I read through the book I was so immersed in the stories, so involved with the characters, that a few times the events on the page actually prompted a physical reaction. My brain has been awash in violence and suspense for most of my life, thanks to movies and video games, and I thought I was inured to it all. Turns out I'm not. O'Shea manages to hone his fiction into a point sharp enough to break through the wall of desensitization and make the reader squirm.

Dan O'Shea is one of the few writers who can pull you into the action and make you sympathize with the protagonist, even with stories that are almost too petite to be properly called shorts. He accomplishes this by presenting characters that are real and wholly believable. They are people, like many people you know or have heard of, with problems, flaws, weaknesses. Many of them feel trapped, and they are looking for ways out. Some are just trying to get by, make it from day to day, living a life that seems more like hell. That seems to be the central premise of "Old School"; the idea that hard boiled detectives and kung fu body builders aren't the only possible subjects of crime fiction, and that narratives with real and believable characters are more compelling.

All of the main characters in this collection, except for a few outliers, are at least in their middle ages. Some are older than that, well into their golden years, even on the brink of death by old-age. They all have something to lose, something to fight for. You may not think that a diaper wearing nursing home resident makes a compelling hero, but if you give this collection a chance, O'Shea will prove you wrong. Having worked in a nursing home at one time in my life, Lou DeGatano, the protagonist of "Sheepshank," reminds me vividly of several people that I know. He seems more real to me than any CIA super spy or genetically engineered soldier ever could. My heart was pounding as I followed his painful efforts to wrap up a lifelong obsession and make peace with himself before his inevitable death. All of the pieces in this collection are just as gripping.

In terms of style, O'Shea is a gifted artist. He writes in the sparse and clipped prose that is normally associated with the "hard boiled" strand of crime fiction, and the stories all move at a brisk pace. I found myself wishing for more visual descriptions at times, and a few of his experiments with form - writing in the present tense and second person perspective - felt awkward to me. Despite those hiccups, and despite the fact that I'm not personally a fan of crime fiction, I found that the vividly real protagonists made it work.

The book could use a second look from an editor, because there are a (very) few rough patches that were missed the first time around, but they are infrequent and forgivable, given the overall quality of the collection. The prose flows well, and the length of the pieces make this book very readable and perfect for when you want a shot of suspense in a limited amount of time. I heartily recommend this read, especially given the price tag. I enjoyed this collection of shorts just as much as the last Stephen King collection I bought, and it was a sixth of the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal February 20, 2012
By CFH
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Crime fic these days is chock-a-block with cool. You know, cartoon violence perpetrated by attractive, badass twenty-somethings straight out of a Tarantino flick, all quips and poses. That's fun and all, but it sure ain't real.

These stories? They're packed with real. They feature folks with families, with debt, with jobs that eat them alive. Folks with worries. Folks with stuff to lose.

In OLD SCHOOL, Dan O'Shea unleashes some powerful writing upon the world, creating characters so fully fleshed you could bump into them on the street, and conjuring the kind of resonance with real life, you can't help but think, "There but for the grace of God go I." The tales contained herein are by turns brutal and hilarious, and every one is worth your time. So what're you still reading this for, when such a killer collection is just a click away?

More About the Author

I'm a Chicago-area writer focused predominately on crime fiction. My collection of short fiction, OLD SCHOOL, was published by Snubnose Press in 2011. Exhibit A Books will publish my debut novel, PENANCE, in April, 2013, and my second novel MAMMON, in 2014. I've worked as a business and financial writer for decades - thirty years of writing about the tax code drove me to write about killing people. I'm represented by Stacia Decker at the Donald Maass Literary Agency.

My stories tend to be dark, but with overtones of redemption. If you're one of those easily offended by rough language, violence or occassional bits of sex, move on. Fair warning.
