A good overview of Old Testament Theology, April 7, 2009

Old Testament Theology
Robin Routledge

Old Testament Theology: A Thematic Approach is a very interesting book. Honestly, I've read several books on the Old Testament. Most of them dealt with backgrounds or overviews of the Old Testament. Old Testament theology is not something I've spent much time with. This book proved to be both enlightening and disappointing.
First of all, the enlightening aspect. Routledge has spent much time studying the Old Testament. He has also spent much time reading the works of others who has studied the Old Testament. This shows in the book. He took great pains to extensively annotate, footnote, and provide bibliographical information.
Routledge examines many different doctrines of the Old Testament. He deals with issues that are common to theology such as God's faithfulness, covenants, and punishment. He also deals with ethics, morality, and law. I found this to be a good thing. This book will be quite handy as a reference when one studies various themes in the Old Testament.
Another positive note is that the book is not overly technical/theological in its jargon. One does not need to be a Phd. Grad to read the book. A person with an inquiring mind and an average reading level will read the book with profit and little difficulty.
The two negative things that I will mention is the author's affinity for associating Ancient Near Eastern practices with Old Testament practices. I understand that the people of the OT were people of their times. I got the feeling at times that Routledge seemed to insinuate that the OT was a product of its times, thus leaving the impression that the OT was practically the product of men's ideas of God as they progressed in life and society and needed new ideas about God. I would have liked to have seen more emphasis on the supernatural aspect of revelation and inspiration to balance that.
The other negative was that the author seems to hold to the old Documentary Hypothesis. That is not a particularly helpful thing to the Bible student.
All in all, for the discerning, mature Christian, this book will be helpful. Its content is good, its research is deep, its readability is good.
I recommend it.
