Editorial Reviews

Hugh Ballard Cross was not only a singer and guitarist in his own right but was associated with several of the most popular bands of the 1920s and 30s. Little appears to be known of his early life other than he was born at Olive Springs, Tennessee, on October 19, 1904. He first came to prominence as a member of the Skillet Lickers mafia where, according to Clayton McMichen, he was responsible for writing some of the bands humorous playlets or skits. The most notable of these was The Kickapoo Medicine Show in which he took an important part. Cross also recorded prolifically as a soloist, as well as duets with his wife, Mary, which were issued as Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Cross, and several with Skillet Licker guitarist and vocalist, Riley Puckett. He also recorded with Clayton McMichen as Hugh Cross & Bob Nichols (McMichen's alter ego). Several of these are included here - notably the first version of Peach Picking Time In Georgia, some two years before Jimmie Rodgers recorded it himself & claimed half ownership. Being one of the biggest sellers of records in America at the height of the depression this was an arrangement with which Im sure McMichen was more than happy. Track Listing: Down Where The Cotton Blossoms Grow, Mansion Of Achin Hearts, If I Only Had A Home Sweet Home, In My Little Home In Tennessee, Tuck Me To Sleep In My Old Kentucky Home, Never No More Blues, Clover Blossoms, Smiles, Dearest Sweetest Mother, A Mothers Plea, Down Where The Swanee River Flows, Pretty Little Blue Eyed Sally, Ill Climb The Blue Ridge Mountains Back To You, Wabash Cannonball, Go Feather Your Nest, My Old Cabin Home, When The Flowers Bloom In The Ozarks, Left My Gal In The Mountains, When I Lived In Arkansas, When Its Peach Pickin Time In Georgia
