Kindergarten-Grade 3–Angela Throgmorton is tired of caring for her snarly, sassy orange cat so she leaves him home when she wins a luxury holiday trip. However, as the woman unpacks her bags at the hotel, Old Tom reveals himself to readers as a secret suitcase stowaway. She remains unaware of his presence as he appears in the background of each scene, hiding in bushes while she photographs crocodiles from a canoe or sitting several seats behind her on a double-decker bus. She misses her pet, and paintings in museums, geographic terrain, and even the full moon remind her of him. As she sits on her bed wiping away tears of loneliness, Tom, hanging in a chandelier overhead, falls into her lap and they spend the rest of the vacation together. The uncomplicated text plays straight man to the wacky artwork. There is a quirky childlike quality to the mixed-media cartoons and the characters have angular, exaggerated features. Angela is depicted as a dowdy woman with a peculiar, gray hairstyle. Tom is a rather crude feline whose right eye is a dark spiral and who always carries a fish skeleton. My young son and I both loved this book. It's the story of Angela Throgmorten, Old Tom Cat's owner (or, should I say, the cat lover whom Old Tom owns). She decided to leave on a vacation without Old Tom, but he sneaks into her suitcase and comes along anyway.

The book is terribly funny and very sweet. My son was in hysterics, looking at pictures of Old Tom hiding in every place that Angela Throgmorten visits.

Highly recommended for the 4 and over crowd.
