After borrowing a friend's canoe a couple of times we took the plunge and bought an Old Town Guide 147. We love the seats with back rests - it is also comparatively stable. We have used it in the South Branch of the Potomac River several times - it has withstood numerous scrapes and bangs against the rocks with no serious damage (a scratch or two). We have NOT tried anything more exciting than a Class I rapid in it. We did flip on our last trip and were able to swim it to the shore for draining and relaunching. It is a good size for two middle-aged, out of shape folks to load and launch. We have plenty of room for a dry bag with lunch and a cooler. You can spend a lot more money on a canoe, but this one is just perfect for our needs.
