A classic tale reworked,

When my mother told me this story a hundred years ago, the butcher killed the ox, the stick beat the dog, the rope hanged the butcher. But in this delicate reworking, the stick pokes the dog, the rope lassos the butcher. This does not take away from the story or the repetition that is at the heart of it. The best thing is, the characters in the story all say "no" to the old woman's request, and the illustrations show the word "no" each time. My 5 year old nephew got this book as a birthday present and my brother-in-law reports that the 5-year-old and his younger brother take great delight in saying "no!" at every reading. My brother-in-law, not so delighted.
