Old World Meets New World, December 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Old World Meets New World (Audio CD)
This is a very interesting collection of new clarinet music. The selection includes composition winners from the International Clarinet Association yearly contests. Unlike other clarinet recordings of classical pieces, this CD contains music that is not otherwise available. This is perhaps the only available recording of Templeton's 2nd Pocket Sonata and the only recordings of Gary Schocker's two award winning compositions. Michelle Gingras has recorded some pieces by little known composers (Nick Ayoub, Mark Carlson, Lucio Agostine) that are not readily available in print music, but merit much more attention than they have received. I wish I could hear more of Nick Ayoub's music. The Cincinnati Klezmer Project section includes some good pieces, but I think there are better Klezmer music recordings. In summary, I think this is a one-of-a-kind album that includes some exciting new music for the clarinet.
