Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The Emerson String Quartet's long cherished dream to record their favorite Dvor k string quartets is realized with their tenderhearted and infatuated readings of the Czech genius's middle and late quartets. A bonanza of romantic melody, not a note on this 3-CD release has ever before been recorded by the Emersons. Dvorak's youthful and infrequently performed song cycle on the subject of love, Cypresses, provides a compelling thematic trove for several of these enamoring quartets.

Review

"Technically speaking the Emerson String Quartet are unimpeachable, with meticulous internal balance and intonation sustained at all times, remarkable tonal matching between the instruments and precision phrasing and dynamics. There is a beguiling transparency about their sound-world that allows every voice to register with the kind of resonance-free clarity . . . " -- International Record Review, London, July 2008

... that "New World Symphony" played obligatorily thrice a day on every 'classical music' radio station and by every pops orchestra on the bandshells of America, is probably the greatest obstacle to audience appreciation of the musical merits of Czech Composer Antonin Dvorak. There's also the familiar "New World" string quartet to overcome, in order to approach and appreciate Dvorak. And now the 'marketing' boys of DGG have compounded the problem by entitling this three-CD performance "Old World - New World"! Oy! Ignore the title!

This package includes four of Dvorak's last five quartets, numbers 10, 11, 13 & 14! It's the missing number 12 that Dvorak composed in Iowa and which supposedly reflects his appreciation of American folk music, thought it sounds mighty Czech to my ears. A month after the American Quartet, Dvorak composed his second Quintet Opus 97 for strings (with a second viola), in somewhat the same vein as the famous quartet but considerably richer in counterpoint and thematic complexity. I'd venture to say that it's one of the most under-appreciated masterworks of the repertoire; if you choose to listen for its 'American' elements, go right ahead, but listen you should! It's performed on the 2nd CD of this set, along with "Cypresses", an unusual suite of 12 impressionistic miniatures for string quartet. If these little pieces sound song-like to you, your ears are perceptive; the suite is a reworking of songs Dvorak had composed in his earliest career. Dvorak spent only three years in the United States, almost entirely in in New York, and there's nothing notably New-Worldish about the vast bulk of his compositions.Honestly, all of Dvorak's quartets are under-appreciated. The four quartets performed here are major accomplishments.

This 3-disc set includes 4 late Dvorak string quartets, the set of short quartet pieces called Cypresses, and a late string quintet. All of these works have immediate appeal, especially for those who enjoy Dvorak's American quartet and piano quintet. The performances by the Emerson Quartet are immaculate and the recording and presentation by DG is first-rate. At mid-price, this set is well worth investigating.

Outstanding performances in every way. I am a string teacher and violist in a local community orchestra in D/FW. See Emerson live whenever you have the chance. They are worth the price!
