Editorial Reviews

The Older and Wiser Workout with Sue Grant is a gentle, safe workout that is perfect for beginners or those who have not been exercising regularly. All of the exercises are done either standing or sitting on a chair with no lying down on the floor. This fun, well rounded workout includes the three vital components of fitness: easy-to-follow low impact aerobics (23 minutes), gentle stretch training (21 minutes) and relaxing cool down & stretch (10 minutes). You may mix and match these different sections depending on how much time you have and how you are feeling each day. In addition, you will see three different levels for each exercise, so you will be able to ''customize'' this workout to meet your particular needs. You'll love the upbeat encouragement and helpful cues, and you will be amazed at how quickly you progress! Equipment needed: sturdy chair with no arms, 2-5 lb. hand weights for strength training, a small pillow (optional).

Sue Grant, certified Master Instructor for FallProof, an internationally recognized Balance and Mobility training program is also certified by the American Council on Exercise and the Arthritis Foundation. Sue holds a Professional Certificate in Fitness Instruction and Exercise Science from UC San Diego, specializing in both Personal Training and Group Fitness Instruction. She is a certified Older Adult Fitness Specialist.

It’s hard to find really good exercise videos for older and/or very out of shape folks.

I really liked the exercises in this video. There are three different aerobic sections, and you can do one, two, or all three. The three women also demonstrate three different levels of intensity. I feel like I've had a good workout at the top level - I'm 71.

HOWEVER - with the possible exception of Richard Simons, I believe Sue Grant is the most irritating exercise leader I've encountered - and I've encountered a lot, because I have a fairly large collection of exercise DVDs. She is unrelentingly perky, and her insistance on telling us over and over how GOOD it feels and how much FUN we're having is really annoying. At one point she says, "I hope you're having a great time. We sure are!!" I exercise because I know it does me good, not because I enjoy it. (How many of us, if we could find a pill that would give us exactly the same benefit as an hour's exercise, would opt for the exercise?)

I would give this DVD a 5 based on the exercises alone. Based on Ms. Grant's saccherine delivery I'd give it a 1 - and I'd give it a 1 only because that's the lowest rating available. I figure they average out to a 3. After I've done the DVD a few more times I'm going to try muting it and see if I can just follow what they do without the audio.

This is a great fun workout. I find it has strenghten muscle, toned and gives a good cardio workout. Nothing in it is too strenuous. It goes at a nice pace. It is also good for coordination and balance. I was never a person to follow a dvd exercise program. But this dvd changed that. I follow the first section the dvd 4-5 times a week. The other two sections, I do at least two of the 4-5 times. After about a month I could see the difference in my strength and the way I felt. I would recommend this dvd to everyone. Sue Grant is a very upbeat person and she is a delight to listen to and follow.

I am 55 years old & wanted a low impact aerobic exercise with no bouncing & no quick turns that get my feet all tangled up & no worries that I might step wrong & injure a knee or throw my back out. I only rated this DVD on the exercise portion as I have some unique health problems so I do not do the strength training or the stretches. Ms. Grant does exercise every muscle with the strength training & stretches which are done from an alternating sitting & standing position. She appears to be knowledgable in all areas of exercise. Ms. Grant does the warm up which gives a careful demonstration on all the steps to be done during the aerobic portion of video. There are 3 women who demonstrate mild, moderate, & advanced moves throughout the video. The 23 minutes of aerobics are divided into three segments. The new steps are slowly introduced in the 1st & 2nd segments with all steps combined in the 3rd segment. She gives cues with plenty of notice. "If I can Que it, you can do it," states Ms. Grant. She points out that you make wise choices & determine your level of exertion. This video is for beginners. Just as the intensity builds to a faster pace & fun level, the segment is over. It is gentle on the joints. I think it is fun. You can go to youtube for a preview of this video. I do not like her other video entitled, Older & Much Wiser because I question the safety of the exercises. If this DVD is too slow, I highly recommend Angie Miller's Absolute Beginners Cardio & Strength Training. It is indeed important to get the right video for you as exercise is vital to any age person, but especially so for the seniors. I hope that I look as good as Ellie, who is in her late 70's, & has a beautiful well kept body. I want to stay mentally fit as well. I am glad that I bought this DVD.

Let me start by saying I just did the entire workout and it felt good. I hate exercise and am very out of shape. I realized the reason I hate working out is because I usually try to do an exercise routine that is too hard and I get discouraged. I had no problem keeping up with this dvd. I have a feeling it will be too easy for me soon:) Great dvd to start an exercise program with.

Most days I attend classes at my local YMCA which provides a range of exercise options for seniors and is also an amiable social setting. It was in this milieu that I first came upon the work of Sue Grant who had a reputation as one of the caring elite of physical fitness for seniors. I purchased her videos for my own exercise at home when I was not able to attend group class and my experience was that it was the perfect stand in for the group energy. The exercises are safe and productive and I felt encouraged by the friendly manner of the three woman demonstrating the exercise level options. Why is this my fifth purchase ? Because I felt it was so basic, safe and supportive I gave it as a gift to others either struggling to start an exercise program or for when they were traveling and from their thanks and feedback I know they used this particular video with positive experience.

This is a good low impact and easy going workout for older people, or people with some mobility issues. You can make it easy or harder depending on your needs.
