Book Description

0123770459 978-0123770455 February 5, 1997 2
This book is a follow-up to Ivins Olefin Metathesis, (Academic Press, 1983). Bringing the standard text in the field up to date, this Second Edition is a result of rapid growth in the field, sparked by the discovery of numerous well-defined metal carbene complexes that can act as very efficient initiators of all types of olefin metathesis reaction, including ring-closing metathesis of acyclic dienes, enynes, and dienynes; ring-opening metathesis polymerizationof cycloalkenes, acyclic diene metathesis polymerization; and polymerization of alkynes, as well as simple olefin metathesis.
Olefin Metathesis and Metathesis Polymerization provides a broad, up-to-date account of the subject from its beginnings in 1957 to the latest applications in organic synthesis. The book follows the same format as the original, making it useful toteachers and to researchers, and will be of particular interest to those working in the fields of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, organometallic chemistry, catalysis, materials science and chemical engineering.

Key Features
* Discusses different classes of olefin metathesis and the choice of reaction conditions and catalyst
* Considers commercial processes with examples from existing and new technologies
* Provides a complete overview of the subject from its beginning to the present day

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Coverage of the literature is up-to-date...,and the book is very well indexed; there is no difficulty in finding your way to a topic of interest. As a document of an important branch of organometallic chemistry, this book is complete and should satisfy all chemists with an interest in olefin metathesis and related reactions."
--Warren E. Piers, University of Calgary, JOURNAL OF AMERICAN CHEMISTRY SOCIETY
"Any reader wishing to know anything about olefin matathesis and metathesis polymerization cannot do better than start with this excellant monograph. . . Nobody active in the area can afford to be without this monograph and any library which serves a research community interest in catalysis, organic synthesis and polymer science and technology will need this book on its shelves."
--W.J. Feast, POLYMER INTERNATIONAL, Vol. 45, No. 3, March 1998

From the Back Cover

Olefin Metahesis by K.J. Ivin was published in 1983. There has since been a great surge of activity in this field, sparked by the discovery of numerous well-defined metal carbene complexes that can act as very efficient initiators of all types of olefin metathesis reaction: ring-closing metathesis of acyclic dienes, enynes and dienynes; ring-opening methathesis polymerization of cycloalkenes; acrylic diene metathesis polymerization; and polymerization of alkynes, as well as simple olefin metathesis. In the last few years molybdenum carbene complexes and the air-and water-stable ruthenium carbene complexes have cme to the fore as very effective catalysts in the synthesis of numerous compounds of biologicial importance; also for the preparation of well-defined polymers and block copolymers of very narrow molecular weight distribution. Functional groups now present no problem in the metathesis reactions of either cyclic or acyclic olefins.

Olefin Metathesis and Metathesis Polymerization provides a broad, up-to-date account of the subject from its beginnings around 1960 to the latest applications in organic synthesis. It is assembled along the same lines as the earlier book so as to be useful to both teachers and researchers and will be of particular interest to those working in the fields of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, organometallic chemistry, catalysis, materials science and chemical engineering.
