Book Description

5 and upK and up
Anna’s great-aunt Olga has collected Christmas postcards all her life. She’s ninety-five, and many of the cards are very old. The holidays are the perfect time for Aunt Olga to share her postcards and her memories with her favorite niece. Decked out in red, Aunt Olga is ready for fun as she teaches Anna how to write her very own Christmas rhymes. Written with warmth and humor, this lovely story is a perfect starting point for discussions of the “olden days”, as well as a charming introduction to the joys of collecting.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

K-Gr. 3. Anna's great-great-Aunt Olga is 95 and still loves Christmas. On the Saturday before the holiday she invites her young niece over for tea, gingerbread cookies, and a nostalgic look at her collection of historic Christmas postcards, which spark memories of Christmases past and of her first job writing verses for such cards. With the postcards as inspiration, the two decide to write poems for each other as Christmas gifts. It's another surprise gift, however, that will make this a Christmas that Anna will always remember. The slight story is expanded by Roberts' energetic drawings and the inclusion of dozens of postcards from the author's personal collection, which demonstrate that while the look of the season may have changed, its spirit remains the same. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Lot to Like In This Beautifully Illustrated Book, February 5, 2006
By
This review is from: Aunt Olga's Christmas Postcards (Hardcover)
The vintage postcards shown on each page are wonderful to see. The artwork by Bruce Roberts is distinctly different from the postcard art and is appealing in a different way. The text by Kevin Major is light but conveys deep meaning and emotion without being cloyingly sentimental. Anyone who loves old Christmas postcards and rich children's book illustration will find this book to be exceptional. The postcards are not identified but that did not detract from the overall pleasure.

I found this book very charming and now a Christmas favorite at our house. In fact this book inspired me to begin collecting vintage Christmas postcards and now during the holidays we pull out the postcards and write poems about them with our children. Great for children over 7 because of the many words per page. Beautiful vintage postcards on every page.
