4.0 out of 5 stars Very Law Enforcement Friendly flashlight!, August 16, 2009
By
This review is from: Olight Triton M30 Flashlight
So first off I started with a few well-known brand LED flashlights, (Streamlight, Surefire). I work in Downtown Seattle primarily during the cover of darkness. I found the Olight M-20 and carried it as my primary light for sometime until I read about the M30 Triton. I got the M30 triton and immediately switched over to it as my primary light. Its amazingly bright, the castoff is usually too bright for driver's eyes while conducting a traffic stop, but allows me to see everywhere inside of the vehicle and my safety is the first and only thing I care about up there so its an amazing light. It has a pretty good throw, but its more of an up close within a 100 feet or so as a good illumination kind of light, you will see it for a few blocks bouncing off of buildings. The strobe feature has been pretty handy when flagging in other officers, minor traffic control and flagging down Fire to come in; but I have yet to use that feature in a tactical application. An amazing light, if you want something that will blow most people's sox off this is your light.. It is just as long if not shorter and significantly thinner then my LED Streamlight. I have three MINOR things that have reduced this flashlight's score in by book, all which focus around the control switch.
1) The cowling in the rear of the flashlight becomes rather painful while shooting with it, and keeping the switch depressed is also difficult to do over a few minutes of time.
2) Finding a Duty holder that will allow me to replace the flashlight back into a holder is rather difficult because of the flared switch in the rear. it has a tendency of catching as I go to replace it back into its holder. I initially used my Bianchi Streamlight holder (yes it fits it with room to spare) and then I went to the Bianchi loop (large) to hold it, which seems to be working pretty well.
3) It goes back to shooting the firearm in the cigar hold, is a bit difficult, I would have like to see future versions having a side switch as well for that.
Other that those few minor gripes about the switch. It's an amazing flashlight. I have had two officers I work with go to it, and another two traffic officers now are also using this amazing light.

As a side story: Two days after purchasing the M30 I backed an officer on a high-risk vehicle stop (felony stop) in which he had locked the primary vehicle's keys in the car without turning on his spotlights onto the suspect vehicle. I approached and then used my M30 Triton light as we normally use a vehicle's spotlight to give us a safety curtain of light. It gave us more than enough light to see inside of the vehicle, and all of the passengers moving (or not moving) around inside. It was amazing and officers commented on how bright the light worked and were amazed that it was that small. I was truly amazed and it sealed the deal in my choice of lights for everyday duty carry.

Officer D. Oreiro,

4.0 out of 5 stars Great "Specialty" Flashlight, But too big for daily/duty carry. More is not always better., July 25, 2009
By
This review is from: Olight Triton M30 Flashlight
Back in the 1980's, Those Monster Mag-Lights used to be all the rage. Somehow, we all convinced ourselves that carrying a 3 pound, 18" flashlight was worth having the durability and brightness those old Mag Lights offered. Of course, that was OK for duty, or in the car, but for personal use, it was always the MiniMag that we would put in our pocket or buttpack, since it was the right size.

The advent of LED Cree lightbulbs and lithium batteries has created an epiphany regarding flashlights. Gone are the days of having to accept the carry of a monster flashlight to get high intensity light. My every daily carry light is a 4", 3oz flashlight (Fenix P3D) that has an output equivalent of an 12 Cell Mag-Light of old. My Duty and Dog-Walking lights (Olight M20's) put out super bright-white light out to 150yards or so, is no bigger than one of those original SureFire 6P's that couldn't reach a quarter of that distance, and can be set to strobe by default for defensive use.

The lights I use now are ultimately carry-able due to their size and weight. This M30, with the 4th battery extension installed (which is required to get 700 Lumens output) becomes almost 9" long. that excludes it from a daily carry category and practically speaking, duty carry as well, since no LEO I know wants to have that long of a flashlight sticking them in the ribs or cutting into their pants.

So, that leaves this light in a specialty category as a small spotlight (it's size is too large to be considered a "Thrower", with is similar in size to an M20 but has a larger head to "throw" the light farther in a tight beam). My buddy up the street ordered up one of these M30's and he loves it. But he's on the Sheriff's Search and Rescue team and says the extra size is worth the 300 yards he says he gets out of it. That makes sense to me. As a motorized use tool, I think this is a good choice. As a carry light, it's just too big. Unless you are going to strap it to the side of your M4 for duty use in Afghanistan, or keep it in your Jeep for trail spotting in off road adventures, I'd suggest you look to the current standards in the industry: the Olight M20 or the Fenix TK-11. And make sure you get the extra high output versions (R2 BIN, or whatever "premium" Cree LED they have as the upgrade option). Those will serve you better as personal defense and duty carry lights, at about 1/3 less in cost. that cost savings will buy you a whole bunch of CR123 batteries, or even better, a nice rechargeable solution using a single 18650 battery.

Just my 2 Cents!

5.0 out of 5 stars M30 Tactical Flashlight, November 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Olight Triton M30 Flashlight
This flashlight is very small compared to other flashlights that produce output brightness of similar lumens. The M30 is not a flashlight that could be carried very easily in ones pocket; however it could be carried very comfortably with the attached belt clip or with the provided holster. The three brightness levels provide enough light for just about any situation. Also the blinding strobe function would be quite effective at discouraging any would-be attackers, and if used with the included flashlight head bezel, it could stop an attack quickly.

I did find that the button that is used to change brightness levels and the strobe function is located in a peculiar location and makes it cumbersome to change the level of light or strobe. In my opinion, this would make it difficult to use the strobe function in a hurry. That being said, if one carries the M30 with their finger on the mode button; the strobe will be readily available. This is true regardless of the flashlight being off or with any of the light levels in use.

The bottom line is this flashlight is incredible. Given its small size and the blinding light output; one can't go wrong with this flashlight. It far exceeded my expectations. I am extremely satisfied with the M30 flashlight, and I give it my highest recommendation.
