This iron is incredible! It is heavy enough to iron well, but light enough that it doesn't trouble my gimpy shoulder! Of course, not having to do all the extra exercise of holding it up to rest on its end really helps---just move off the ironing area and let go...it automatically raises and I have even set it on a wood table and it raises and doesn't leave a mark. 1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I was very excited about this iron because I've used one in quilting class and I was looking forward to having one of my own. When I received my iron, the Auto Shutoff did not work. I called Oliso and they had me return the iron to them. They promptly replaced it. So, after the delay, I finally got my replacement iron. The iron works great for dry ironing, and I love...

The stainless soleplate is very smooth and would be easy to clean if necessary---and I prefer stainless over the teflon for environmental reasons as well as had trouble with another teflon iron in the past....

This review is from: Oliso TG-1000 Steam Iron Auto-Lift System with Stainless Steel Soleplate (Kitchen)
I was very excited about this iron because I've used one in quilting class and I was looking forward to having one of my own. When I received my iron, the Auto Shutoff did not work. I called Oliso and they had me return the iron to them. They promptly replaced it. So, after the delay, I finally got my replacement iron. The iron works great for dry ironing, and I love the auto-lift. However, the steam setting does not work too well. Most of the time the steam won't come out unless I actually press the little steam button. I thought it might be confused with the Auto-lift so I tried it as a regular stand-up iron and it worked a little better, but I didn't buy the iron to use it like a regular iron. I really like the idea of not having to stand the iron up. It also leaks water - quite a bit as a matter of fact. I am very disappointed with this iron and sorry that I spent the money on it. I would not recommend it as a steam iron.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this iron, January 11, 2007
This review is from: Oliso TG-1000 Steam Iron Auto-Lift System with Stainless Steel Soleplate (Kitchen)
Ironing is not most people's favorite activity. This iron makes it a breeze. It actually does what the manufacturer says it will do, without spitting, losing heat or burning your clothes. I highly recommend this product for quilters, sewists and others who need to iron the occasional shirt or blouse.

4.0 out of 5 stars That "lift" changes the way you iron. In a good way., February 12, 2010
This review is from: Oliso TG-1000 Steam Iron Auto-Lift System with Stainless Steel Soleplate (Kitchen)
I waited for a few months after purchasing this iron to see how my opinion changed over time. I initially was concerned that the spiffy "lift" -- which I first saw in use on a quilting TV show -- was a gimmick that would wear off. I'm glad to say that it isn't; it's a truly useful feature that has eased my life.

Anyone who quilts spends a lot of time ironing, just as anyone who does woodworking has to be ready to do a lot of sanding. You really can't scrimp on this without regretting it later. But ironing 104 block pieces can get tedious. You iron a piece or two, move it to the Done pile, and set the iron down while you grab the next batch. You do this for at least 20 minutes. It gets old. Fast. As a result, I _really_ like that I can set the iron down and it'll "lift up" to prevent problems... saving me from that repeated lift/twist/balance exercise.

Of course, a single nifty feature does not justify the top-end price of any iron. It's just the most visible example of the quality of this iron. I've found that it has enough weight to do a serious job of ironing, but it isn't so heavy that I'm exhausted. Loading water into it is easier than it was with the old Rowenta which it replaced. (No real criticism of the Rowenta; I wore out that poor thing.) If you do quilting or other serious sewing, DO invest in a good iron. You'll feel the difference even if you can't articulate it.

As other reviewers have noted, it _can_ be a little drooly with the steam setting on. I've found that it helps to set the iron back on its heel, every so often; don't rely on the auto-lift all the time. The only other irritation is that because of the button in the middle of the iron, it no longer fits in my wall-mounted iron storage compartment (above the folded-up ironing board) and has to be kept on a shelf.

But I'm okay with that. Because I've found that ironing is much less of a hassle than it was previously. And isn't that the best you can hope for with ironing?

5.0 out of 5 stars Love my Oliso iron, May 21, 2007

I quilt and sew a lot so I need an iron that will be there when I need it. I saw it being used on Fons & Porter's quilting show and wanted it because it couldn't be knocked over.

The auto shut-off feature is not the best for quilters because it turns off and isn't there when you need it sporadically, but it hasn't been a big problem for me because the iron heats up fast. I really like this iron. Good steam and gets very hot. I don't have to worry about my cats burning themselves on this if it gets knocked over because they can't knock it over. I like the legs although I was worried about it burning my ironing board when I first got it. That hasn't happened.

It has a nice, long cord that doesn't get tangled up. It's easy to fill it with water. No water spills all over the ironing board when I go to refill it. I really like that feature. The only con I can think of is that the iron has to be set to "off" if you're not going to use it for a while, then turned back to "on" when you need it. Took me a while to figure that out and I had a problem with the legs not retracting after it automatically shut itself off. As long as I turn it off, then back on it works fine. It heats up fast so it's not a big problem.

Not having to set the iron on it's end every time I'm through with it sold me on this iron. That feature is wonderful. The only thing I have to remember is that if I'm ironing at someone else's place, I have to remember to put their iron on it's end. haha I burned my daughter's ironing board!

It's very neat. No more cracked plastic on my iron from it falling over. I recommend this iron.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Iron, February 19, 2007
This review is from: Oliso TG-1000 Steam Iron Auto-Lift System with Stainless Steel Soleplate (Kitchen)
Very smooth. Good pressure of steam and I love the automatic riser. The only thing I would change is having an option for the steam to be released automatically, rather than having to press the steam feature.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, January 9, 2009
This review is from: Oliso TG-1000 Steam Iron Auto-Lift System with Stainless Steel Soleplate (Kitchen)
I bought this iron at the now defunct Sharper Image in the summer of 08 when they were going out of business.

I needed an iron and it seemed like a good deal at the time with all of the features and the reduction in price.

It worked "ok", but as some people mentioned. It doesn't seem to generate enough steam while ironing and there is definitely a lag when pushing the steam button. I did like the auto lift function, but not enough to ever buy another.

My iron stopped working recently, so I got about 6 months use of a $60 (sale price) iron, which I am definitely not happy about.

I sent an email to customer service and talked to a lady and she told me that I could send it back with the proper receipt.

Well, I tossed it away and told her that I thought I didnt need it. She was kind enough to let it slide and told me to print a copy of the email and send the iron back.

2 stars for the customer service rep and 0 for the iron. I ended up buying a $30 black and decker and that thing puts out double the amount of steam in no time. I just gotta learn to put it upright after being used to this auto lift system.

This is the best iron I have ever owned. It is such a pleasure to use and not have to worry about scorching or tipping it over and my ironing board cover doesn't have that scorched look any more. Such a great idea, I just love it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Iron stopped working after two weeks, December 23, 2009

I too bought this 'so-called' wonderful iron only to have it stop working after two weeks of use.

I have been unable to get up with customer support, sent several emails, and called with no response.

My husband is an electrical engineer and has tried to repair the iron, only to find out that the part numbers have been 'conveniently' scratched off...no way to get replacement parts and fix it himself. It is probably a 25 cent item that went out but can't find any schematics on this piece of crap. I guess it's time to contact the BBB.

I bought a Rowenta that can iron circles around this hunk of junk.

I really like the feet and not having to stand the iron up after each pressing. It also glides very smoothly while ironing. The only thing I have been disappointed in is the "extreme steam" feature. When I use the steam surge button, it doesn't always release steam. I also don't like having to turn it off and unpluggng it to add water!
