I heard about this iron last year but didn't purchase it because it was $129 and I read a poor review on Amazon. Then a few months ago I read 2 great reviews from Gizmodo and Engadget so I stared to consider it again. In February my old trusty Kenmore iron died and a week or so later I read 2 very favorable magazine reviews (how old school) in Time Magazine's Feb. issue and Men's Health Magazine 2006 Tech Guide. I finally decided to go for it...and after over a month of use I am happy to say that they were right and this thing is AMAZING! I think I may be the first person to actually buy it, use it for over a month and then write a real review on Amazon. Believe me, I know I'm talking about an iron here but I've been ironing since I went to college and left my mom's home 15 years ago and I've never used an iron that does its job as stated and totally improves and speeds up my ironing chores while also being very safe.

I had owned and used my Kenmore Iron for almost 10 years and I loved it besides the fact it was very heavy and not so steamy the last few months. I had been considering the Black & Decker D2030 that everyone seems to love but after testing it I noticed the digital lcd screen was too hard to see and confusing unless I was at the perfect angle. Since most of the time I'm ironing quickly and half asleep in the morning I realized that feature could be a disaster so I kept researching and luckily picked up the right magazines in February. This Oliso iron does everything the D2030 can do but is just as easy to use and can do MUCH more. Seriously, the touch sensitive handle which causes the iron to raise up off my clothes and then lower back down with the touch of my hand is worth the $99 I spent alone and the best ironing idea since the iron was created!

As for features that matter the most for pro ironers like my grandma ;-), it heats up fast and has powerful, continuous, and balanced steam that is strong enough for my toughest and stiffest stuff like jeans. My favorite feature, it can do vertical bursts of super steam (like a real steamer) that removes wrinkles from any of my shirts that are hanging on a hangar with a few blasts (read: shirts ready in less than a minute without using an ironing board and because this thing auto lifts while in the natural horizontal position I can put it down naturally on ANY surface and its safe). My final thought, the engineers that thought this up must be smart people who definitely use steam irons...Did I mention it has a long pivoting cord, huge water tank that opens outward for filling right under my faucet, auto shut off and some special detailer feature on the front that allows me to do cuffs and collars easier than I've ever done. I could actually go on but I'd rather you buy one and discover ironing that is easy and kind of fun...

Thanks Oliso!

This is one of those toys you buy and play with for about a day, take it out of the closet to show your friends, but isn't good for daily ironing. It's a pretty iron but it doesn't work. I bought one despite what some other folks thought about this iron, and now I regret it, I should have paid more careful attention to all the reviews! It is true about the leaking, dribbling out water, lifters knocking it off the ironing board, poor and inconsistant steam, cheap plastic construction, and non-gliding soleplate.

This is the nicest iron I've ever used. It seems very well made and sturdy. The blue see-through water reservoir gives it a very modern look. It glides really nicely on the fabric. The steam seems more consistent and stronger than other irons I've used in the past. The "steam burst" feature gives a very powerful blast of steam that is great for tough wrinkles. The Auto-Lift feature is really cool and slick. It made the task of ironing more fun...a smart, high-tech iron! I believe the auto-lift feature definitely improves the safety of ironing too. The Auto-Lift feature is my favorite part because it is something different that I never experienced before. It is nice to just push the iron to the side without having to stand it up vertically. I also really like the status light, the way it uses different colors and flashes to indicate the iron's status. I find this very useful because it lets me know exactly when the iron is hot enough to use...no more guessing.

I was hesitant to buy this iron as it had some bad reviews. I am a quilter and this has been a great iron so far. It doesn't tip easily and I get such a kick out of the elevator feet. Steam probably could be better, but for quilting it is fine. I would think for pants or tailoring probably not the best steam.

It is not noisy, and I have had great fun and amusement using it, just hard to not set it upright takes awhile to get use to that. It was worth it to me.

Why I purchased the Oliso iron:

I iron my clothes regularly. I am very particular about ironing my clothes. I have used many irons and finally got and loved my Rowenta DG-980 Expert Steam Generator, which I purchased 1-1/2 years ago from Amazon.

The Rowenta's power switch does not click on & off anymore and after I knocked it off the ironing table about 3 times, the steam button does not click right. But the iron still works, just the power keeps cutting off at the slightest shake. So I began to search for a cheaper alternative iron as I did not want to spend another $300 after only 1-1/2 years of use. Even if I were to send it off to get it fixed, I would need another good iron in the meantime.

About the Oliso experience:

I was very impressed by the Oliso TG-800 Touch & Glide Steam Iron's web site where they have a movie showing how it works. What caught my eye was that in that movie they show how difficult it is to knock this iron off the ironing board, which is how I broke my other iron.

The main feature of this iron:

The Oliso iron lifts off the surface about 3/4" automatically when you lift your hand off of it. You don't need to stand it up like other irons and thus the lesser chance of getting knocked off the table. When you touch the handle again, it lowers itself automatically. This is accomplished by a motorized unit which makes a sort of annoying noise every time you touch the handle or let it go.

When I got the iron my kids watched with amazement how this iron lifted itself off the table when I took my hands off it. I was also quite excited and could not wait to knock out the first pair of pants as I do under a minute with my Rowenta Steam Generator almost every day. Shirts take about 2 minutes.

The good, the bad and the beautiful:

First thing I noticed was that the continuous steam feature puts out extremely mild amount of steam and was very ineffective. I re-read the manual and found that I had done exactly as it described regarding the settings.

This iron has a large water tank. There is a drain valve at the front towards the top. When I started ironing drops of water started to splash on the garment. So I decided to dry it off by simply gliding over it. To my amazement even though I gave this iron 10 minuets to get hot with the heat setting at the highest level, the heat was not enough to burn off the water drops. So I went over it again, and again the water splashed this time only more.

I spent about 20 minutes experimenting with this iron and I found that the drain valve does not have a stopper and when you pull back the iron as in gliding in reverse the water in the container splashes to the front of the iron and leaks out of the drain valve and lands on your clothes. The amount of water that splashes each time you pull back is about ? tea spoonful which is quite unacceptable as it seeps through the garment into the ironing board and not quick to dry. However if you iron very, very slowly, the water does not splash. One mistake, maybe the phone rang and you took your mind of this snail pace and you have done it again. A mess to deal with all over again.

By using a very slow motion I was able to iron my pants in 7 minutes. Partly because the burst of steam was not quite strong enough for the khakis and partly because of the very slow motion I had to use to avoid splashing the water on the garment.

So, who is this iron for?

* Well if you want to impress your friends or spouse (who is not interested in ironing) about how sleek looking this iron is, this will do very well.

* If you iron rarely & without steam, this will probably do.

* If you have nothing better to do but iron all day, go for it.

As for that over-working noisy motor that lifts the iron up, I doubt that it would last with heavy use. Too many moving parts to go wrong. And as for me, I kept thinking this is a nightmare that I will soon wake up from. And I certainly did. When I packed it right back in the same box and shipped it to Amazon for a full refund.

For the record. Oliso only makes one and only one model of iron. Unlike other experienced companies like Rowenta, Kenmore etc., Oliso does not have any other products either as of this writing.

You might be asking, what about the other nice reviews about this iron?

Well, most of these people are talking about how SLEEK and MODERN the LOOKS are. They are also comparing it with some $30 Walmart iron they have used before. One even talks about how smoothly it glides. Folks, if the iron does not glide smoothly, it is not an iron, it's a nail file. And to that reviewer who irons 2 hours a week, I say, get a Rowenta Steam Generator and you will cut your ironing from 2 hrs. to just 15 minutes.

Summary:

Pros:

Good looking

Auto lifting feature to avoid burning clothes.

Cons:

Water leaks from reservoir due to faulty design.

Does not get very hot.

Steam burst not adequate for heavy pants.

Continuous steam feature is too mild to be effective.

The motorized mechanism for lifting the iron is very noisy and may not last too long.

I like mine so well I'm giving my sister who quilts alot one for her birthday-very handy when you need to open seams and I have cats so I don't worry about them tipping it over.

This iron is amazing the way it automatically raises off the surface as soon as your hand is removed from the handle (just like magic). I also like the steam feature that seems so much stronger than the other irons we have. This iron is safer and the time spent ironing is less when you don't have to stand it up while adjusting the fabric. I'm very glad I purchased this iron for our family!

I have a retreat facility and I also teach quilting, and in the last 8 months, I've purchased 8 of these irons for classes. So far 6 have had to be returned. Some lasted for a few months, some only a few hours. First they would stop going up/down, then they'd stop heating. Nothing unusual about the way they were used. When I returned the first 4, the company replaced them quite happily, and said something had been 'revamped' and the replacements wouldn't give me any problems. After 1 month, 2 of the replacements have died. I'm down to my last 2 and I've had it with these.
It's too bad, because, while they were actually working, I loved them!

This iron is a toy and not practical for everyday ironing.

Pros:

features

appearance

Cons:

poor performance

poor quality

bulky

Poor performance: steam is inconsistent. Although the dial is turned to maximum, the steam burst button spits out more water than steam. Soleplate does not glide over surface like the name implies....they should call it Touch & Drag to be more accurate.

Poor quality: it has a very "plastic" feel to it, this iron is made in China. Rowenta is made in Germany, and the quality shows!

Bulky: It's such a lug! When maneuvering the iron around button areas and along the collar, the iron is so heavy and massive, that it makes it a chore. Smaller lighter-weight irons are much easier to get into the "tough" spots than this one.

Wow! Could not believe negative review on this iron.... I am a quilter and sewer and use this iron daily. I HIGHLY recommend this iron. I absolutely LOVE not having to place it on its end each time I have to adjust my fabric. Really takes stress off of my wrists and for my purposes, the feet on this iron make it a much more SAFE and STEADIER iron. Not sure how this iron would fall off an ironing board (as the other reviewer states).... any other iron is more likely to fall over / off and has higher potential for burning incidents due to having to be placed on its end. The on / off function has NEVER failed and while quilting, I leave it on for hours at a time. The water reservoir is easy to refill and the VISIBILITY is a plus! (I recommend against using tap water due to mineral build up - use bottled water only). I am on my second one after 4 years ONLY due to my having purchased the non-stick version and it wearing off due to high usage. Have to add that my husband - who insists on ironing his own shirts - LOVES this iron also.
