5.0 out of 5 stars Can not BELIEVE this deal!!, February 21, 2007
This review is from: Olive Oil Bottle 16 oz.
This comes just as pictured with the bottle and the spout. It has a rubber graduated stopper, so it could fit on slightly smaller bottle tops if desired. The oil stream comes out perfectly, not too fast, not too slow. It doesn't have the cover on the tip like more expensive models, but the curved style prevents dust from falling into the bottle anyway, so it hasn't been a problem whatsoever. The bottle is a rugged, thick glass, and the spout is rugged as well. I've knocked the bottle over by accident several times without incident. And no oil has spilled out when it has fallen over either. As far as the oil going rancid, no problem with mine. I've had it for a couple of months and haven't had any change in taste. I'm no connoisseur, but honestly, this just doesn't even seem to be a problem. Perhaps over a really long time it would be? At this price, you could just add a cork for a cover if you were really worried. I LOVE this product. I keep two of these on the stovetop, one with EVOO and one with vegetable oil. It looks so nice, and it is so so handy. GREAT purchase!

I plan on getting several, adding garlic to one, home dried thyme to another, basil to a third, etc... a little drizzle and a bit of vinegar yield endless salad dressing options, or a little drizzle on pasta and a bit of cheese, or a toasted crusty bread with a flavored oil drizzled over the top, a slice of tomato and mozzarella cheese melted up on top... mmmmm

1.0 out of 5 stars Be ware of spouts for olive oil, February 11, 2007
By
This review is from: Olive Oil Bottle 16 oz.
I understand the appeal of having the convenience of a spout on a bottle of oil, but be aware that the spout will allow air into the bottle. You may think air only gets in when you pour oil out, but that's not true. Any time the temperature rises, the air in the bottle expands and some escapes through the spout. When the temperature drops, air enters the spout. This is true of even small changes in temperature such as you experience in a kitchen. If you don't use the oil pretty quickly this constant exchange of air will expose the oil to oxygen and that will cause the oil to go rancid.

If you use cheap olive oil (and pretty much all grocery store olive oil is cheap oil -- even the extra virgin) you may not notice as much since cheap oils tend to be more bitter than good olive oils, but it will still happen. I would never put olive oil in a bottle with a spout again. (I learned this lesson the hard way.)

A better option, though less elegant, is to use a bottle with a pour spout and cap, or find a pour spout that has a cap to seal it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A home made stopper suggestion for the open spout., March 15, 2008
By
Boston Bean (Dorchester, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Olive Oil Bottle 16 oz.
This really isn't a review, because everyone has already said what I might have posted. It is, however, a suggestion for a makeshift cap for the spout. I got two of the bottles. One for Extra Virgin Olive oil, and the other for the regular olive oil that I use for cooking. I was concerned about the open spout...dust, air, insects, etc. I know that I have some rubber/plastic caps around here someplace. but....LOL....can't locate them at the moment. So, I took two extra chopsticks that I had in the drawer, and cut the tips of to a length of about 1 1/2 inches. The tapered tip fits in the spout, and the oil is protected. They are easily duplicated, in the event that they get lost. If you're creative, you could glue the stopper you've made with a decorative cap.
