Book Description

9657397065 978-9657397060 June 10, 2007 Bilingual
The Olive Tree Dictionary translates from Arabic to English and contains an English Arabic Index. The Dictionary contains 784 pages 9,000 entries, 17,000 phrases and an index of 14,000 English words. The Olive Tree Dictionary helps English speakers to unlock the beauty and mystery of the Arabic language. Until the creation of this unique publication, the challenge of mastering Arabic script has prevented many from communicating with native Arabic speakers. Utilizing an inimitable and innovative method, Arabic words are organized phonetically according to their English verbalizations. Whether your purpose is work or leisure, all entries in the dictionary are fully transliterated and easy-to-read and to use. Each item contains a modern up-to-date translation that includes at least one sentence demonstrating its correct pronunciation and usage. The author, J. Elihay, has published numerous works and helped thousands of non-Arabs learn and actually speak colloquial Arabic. Although the dictionary focuses on Eastern Arabic dialects, (Jordanian, Syrian, Lebanese, and Palestinian Arabic) it is a relevant and valuable work for all those interested in learning Arabic. The dictionary s emblem, the Levant and the Olive Tree, signifies peace. In some small measure, the Olive Tree Dictionary contributes towards bridging the gap of understanding between English and Arabic speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, April 10, 2008

This review is from: The Olive Tree Dictionary: A Transliterated Dictionary Of Conversational Arabic (Arabic and English Edition) (Hardcover)
This dictionary is an exceptional reference to spoken Eastern Arabic (the Palestinian dialect). The layout is easy to follow, the usage of the words in everyday sentences is helpful and I have found it adds measurably to my limited Arabic to date. Having gone through levele 1 and 2 of the Pimsleur audio guides I was looking for something to give me a wider vocabulary - this dictionary fits that need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional work on Palestinian / Israeli Arabic, November 13, 2010
This review is from: The Olive Tree Dictionary: A Transliterated Dictionary Of Conversational Arabic (Arabic and English Edition) (Hardcover)
The Olive Tree Dictionary is a recent update and translation to English of the extremely practical 'Dictionnaire de l'Arabe parle palestinien', first published in French in 1973 by Israeli linguist Yohanan Elihai (ISBN 2-252-02511-5).

This book is at the same time extremely rigorous and faithful to the vernacular spoken by Muslim and Christian Arabs in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, and simultaneously written in a very pragmatic way. The author has found enlightening, original and simple ways to explain the various subtleties of this Arabic dialect (e.g. conjugation, stress changes, etc).

It is mainly based on the urban usages of Jerusalem and Galilee. However, beyond the Palestinian area, this remains a very helpful book for all Levant dialects (western Syria, Lebanon, Western Jordan), both for its accuracy and simplicity, and because the main variations of vocabulary are indicated (e.g. words for "now", "they", etc).

It is thus a very advisable acquisition too make.

This review is from: The Olive Tree Dictionary: A Transliterated Dictionary Of Conversational Arabic (Arabic and English Edition) (Hardcover)
I'm studying spoken Arabic in Amman, Jordan. I have not found such an extensive dictionary for spoken Arabic (Levant dialect). This book is a tremendous help since spoken and written Arabic are so different. Bilingual people have told me that the difference between written and spoken is like today's spoken English to Beowulf. The definitions are also full with example sentences. I strongly recommend this to anyone studying spoken (Levant) Arabic.
