I just received the (very small) olive tree in the mail in very good condition -- it was well-packed in excelsior & there was masking tape over the sides of the 4" pot to keep the soil intact. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed with phone service
I had a question about the olive tree that I purchased and was cut short and told by the person that answered the phone at Hirt's that I should Google it because they didn't know anything about it.

I planted the tree in an 8.5" ceramic pot with an 1/4" layer of sand over the top of the soil to protect the basil & Italian parsley seeds that I scattered around the base. Then I watered it & set it out on my back porch (southern exposure/full sun) & so now we'll see what happens ...

Out of the 4 live plants that I ordered from this company (1 olive, 1 pineapple, 1 blueberry, 1 banana), the only one that's not suffering AT ALL from transplant shock is the olive tree. And, incredibly, the tree's 2 lone branches (8" & 12") are already starting to show new growth. (Technically it's fall here in sunny Southern California, but we're still having quite warm days -- 70 to 90 degrees F.) So far, so good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hirt's--a trustworthy seller (Olive tree), May 31, 2009

The olive tree I received was also quite small (as to be expected for the price). I am not exactly certain how I am going to train this tree because there are two equally-sized tiny branches on a kind of crooked base. Also, it is really taking a long time to get going, but hopefully it will finally take root and take off. Quality product, but just small and taking its time acclimating.

Having sad this, however, I must say that I have ordered numerous plants from Hirt's over the last two-three years and have always been pleased with their timeliness and product.

I ordered three olive plants, and when they were shipped, such care was taken with the packaging. no dirt was spilled, the plants had been watered but no water leaked. Very impressed with how it arrived.

Does anyone have any idea of the variety of olive this is?
I'm guessing it is mission or arbequina, but i could be mistaken. These two are cold hardy and the pot can be left in an un-heated garage over winter. Others cannot.
Any info appreciated.

I bought this little tree from Hirts Gardens. It came a day before the expected delivery timeframe even began, was strong, very healthy, and is doing fabulous, which is great considering how cold it still is. It was exactly as pictured, and as carefully packed so as not to get damaged during transit. There was a warmer in the box that was still slightly warm when it arrived. It's only been a week and my tree has already started sprouting a few new leaves. I have a few indoor potted olive trees, and will be training this one to be an indoor shrub/bonsai. Definitely recommended!

Update: The tree is still doing great a week later, but I noticed that it does have a few armored scale insects and that some of the leaves have peacock spot mold growing. Copper spray fungicide easily took care of the mold and the scale insects were removed using the head of a pin. Due to this I changed my review from 5 stars to 4 stars, but for $6, you still can't beat what you get for the price. I ordered 3 more today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased, January 18, 2011

I was concerned about ordering live plants to be delivered when temperatures were below freezing outside, but to my surprise, the plants arrived not only alive, but thriving. The package was sent by priority mail and was labeled "perishable" on the outside. Each plant (Olive Tree, Dwarf Musa Banana, Coffee Plant, and Dwarf Blueberry) was carefully packed in packing peanuts and not a single leaf was disturbed or wilted. There was a warmer included in the package to keep the plants warm during shipment. Each plant pot was individually wrapped with masking tape to prevent the soil from falling out. The plants were bigger than I anticipated. It has been about a month and all of the plants are continuing to grow. I am very happy with my purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why it's so strange?, February 6, 2012

My tree came with good condition a month ago, I really like its little leaves. BUT why it just has two branches? It grows well, on of the branches is very long and slim now. It's a little ugly. I don't know how to trim it, maybe I should cut the long one.
