Chamaco Ramirez is the best sonero ever.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Plante Bandera (Audio CD)
In this classic Salsa album you will be able to listen to the most underrated Sonero of the Hard salsa. Chamaco's knowledge of the rithym and improvisation are unique .This album is a great example of his talent. Is very tragic that almost no one remember his talent today.

Tommy Olivencia,
By Edward R. Lopez (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Plante Bandera (Audio CD)
My favorite Tommy Olivencia album of all. Possibly one of salsa's greatest recordings. A little known salsa gem especially nowadays. I recently heard it played by one of L.A.'s best club dj's (dj Frank) and I was surprised that he had a copy. If you asked most salseros fairly new to salsa they won't have any idea who Tommy Olivencia is.. It's a little like explaining Cuban Timba artists to most U.S. salseros: they just don't have a clue. Tommy's Trucutu is a song that will blow you away. This and many other ot the tunes are beyond a doubt super danceable and you will be very surprised at the strength of Chamaco Ramirez voice and of this outstanding orquestra. 6 stars!

"Plante Bandera" remains one of the all-time best Puerto Rican Salsa recordings of all time. The late great Chamaco Ramirez was a great sonero whose lightning-fast, witty and unapologetically street-flavored soneos (improvisations) were nothing short of remarkable. "Evelio Y La Rumba", "Casimira", "Trucutu", "A La Yumbae" and the immortal title track are superb examples of classic 1970s Salsa. The band's musicians' aggressive, no-holds-barred and very funky playing compliments Chamaco's singing style perfectly. If you love yesteryear's "Salsa Dura" waste no time in getting this CD. Indispensable!!!

O.K here it goes.. Chamaco Ramirez is like on FIRE!! on this whole CD. Like he was in the Zone through all of these tracks. This is probably the greatest "sonero" of all time... Maelo gets the nod because of longevity. But man o man!! Chamaco is the Truth... Trucutu is the Gem. Plante Bandera is just the Anthem of the 70's. Seirously Chamaco is on FIRE in this album... Based on this album alone I would induct Chamaco Ramirez into Salsa's Hall of Fame.. That good!! Get this now!! Now!! Whew...

No serious salsero should miss out on this CD as it's one of the greatest Puerto Rican Salsa recordings ever made. Olivencia and company give us some searing-hot and very funky "Salsa Dura" grooves suchas "Evelio Y La Rumba", "Si Estas Herido", "Casimira", "A La Yumbae" and the timeless title track. The late Chamaco Ramirez gives some of his wittiest, funkiest and powerful soneos (improvisations) which serve as a perfect compliment to the musicians' take-no-prisoners and fiery playing. This new and digitally remastered version offers considerably better sound quality than the previously available CD and at a lower price. If you don't yet have this CD all I can say is... GET IT Now!!!

Okay everyone lets hop in our salsa time machines and go back to 1975 to the golden age of salsa. "Plante Bandera" by Tommy Olivencia and produced by Luís Perico Ortiz is one of those gems that makes me wish I was around back then to see some of the heroes of salsa in their prime. "Plante Bandera" was also to be Chamaco Ramirez's final recording with Tommy Olivencia as a lead vocalist, before his untimely death. This CD (LP back in the day) has Ortiz's signature big band sabor (flavor) and sharp trumpet solos. With chart topping classics like ""Planté Bandera", "Casimira", "Si Estas Herido", "Evelio y La Rumba", and one of my favorites "Trucutu", which by the way, is actually a shout out to the truqueros - con artist who lie in wait to take advantage of people in poor communities. All in all, "Plante Bandera" is an off the cadenas (chains) CD de la escuela vieja (from the old school) that is a must have for your Salsa collection.[...]
