Book Description

January 2003
OLIVER IN THE BATH is the story of a boy who doesn't want to get into the bathtub.  Once he's in, he doesn't want to get out.  Oliver and Mommy imagine what Oliver's life would be like if he lived in the bathtub.  OLIVER IN THE BATH is the latest presentation from the producers of Jazz, Baby.

OLIVER IN THE BATH is presented in three languages, English, French, and Spanish on each page.  Included with the book is an audio CD, recorded by native speakers so that the listener can also follow the story in English, French, and/or Spanish.  The multiple languages introduce children to our multilingual world, while the story and pictures delight and entertain. The CD has six tracks: 1. English 2. French 3. Spanish 4. English page followed by French page 5. English page followed by Spanish page 6. English page followed by French followed by Spanish.

Illustrated by L.B. Kovetz in photographic collage with pen and ink additions, OLIVER IN THE BATH has a low-tech approach to design that invites children to revel in a medium (collage) that is as familiar to them as their kindergarten classroom.

OLIVER IN THE BATH co-written by two sisters, L.B. and J.P. Kovetz, allows children to turn an ordinary, everyday activity - taking a bath - into an exciting, sometimes silly, always funny adventure that includes a wide-range of real and imaginary activities: a visit from Grandma - in the bathtub, a family vacation - in the bathtub, a conversation with the goldfish - in the bathtub, and a trip to outer space - in the bathtub.

More About the Author

The Tuesday Erotica Club is my first novel, published by Sourcebooks, Inc. It's a story about a women's book club that can't stop talking about s*x. (For some reason, Amazon won't let me write the word "s*x".) The book is about two of my favorite subjects, s*x and real estate. Before this I was a music producer. The best thing I ever did was the Jazz, Baby series of jazz for kids with amazing artist singing nursery rhymes set to jazz - Taj Mahal doing "If I Had A Hammer," Billy Preston singing "Clementine." And lots of others. It's a great set of music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Who edited this book?, July 28, 2007

This review is from: Oliver in the Bath (Book & Audio CD) (Paperback)
I was really excited to get this book since my bilingual (Spanish/English) son is now in a French immersion program and reading in all 3 languages. It seemed to be the perfect book for him with the CD and everything.

When I listened to it in the car I was very happy. My son enjoyed listening to it and reading along in all three languages. The Spanish was very good SPANISH Spanish (from Spain,) which is not but we speak, but that's fine. The French sounds good to me, but I don't speak French so can't really judge it well.

So when I finally got a chance to look at the book I was disappointed because the perfect book wasn't so perfect. On the first page the audio translation in Spanish doesn't match the written, which doesn't change the meaning but could affect an early reader. What's worse, however, is that there is a spelling error on the second page (missing the second u in "juguetes"), another on the next page ("al" instead of "la") and multiple spelling errors in terms of missing accents throughout the book. It makes me wonder about the French.

The collage illustrations are great, very unique. The story is cute, the audio translations seem to be fine, but was it really that hard to get proper print editing in the translations? I find it completely unacceptable, ESPECIALLY in a children's book since kids are just learning to read and need to see proper spelling in print if they are to learn to read and write properly.
