Grade 3-5 Lately all of ten-year-old Ollie's schemes to raise money for wildlife conservation are backfiring. Disguising his dog as a tiger or playing his wolf howl record at the garage sale only lead to trouble. Steiner depicts Ollie's attempts to learn to think before he acts in a series of swift-moving, humorous episodes, the humor itself bringing out the characters of family, friends and enemies. The classroom scenes balance the funnier incidents and further the conservation theme. Steiner obviously knows her subjects (kids and conservation) very well. Her skillful interweaving of the conservation theme and her consistently light but sure touch with this serious subject make Oliver Dibbs . . . more than just another funny school story.
