Book Description

P and up
Oliver loves trains ... or does he? Oliver is afraid of dogs ... or is he? How do we know, when he never says anything? People assume Oliver is shy, because his chatty parents and bossy sister always talk for him. When he starts prekindergarten and is asked what he would like to do, at first the words don't come out. But once he realizes that this is his big chance to speak up for himself, nothing can stop him! What does Oliver really want to say?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A humourous and enchanting story to encourage children to speak up." -- --Montreal Review of Books

"The book is a delight ... gives the reader or listener many opportunities to predict the outcome of each episode." -- Joan Thomas, Elementary School Teacher, Ontario --Joan Thomas, Elementary School Teacher, Ontario

What a wonderful little story. Sometimes it takes children a little while to realize that they have a voice and an opinion. This story would be an easy way to teach quiet students that they have a right to share their thoughts and feelings. I applaud the author and illustrator for making such a meaningful story for not only kids, but their families too. - --Kathy Clarke, Principal, Park and Joseph Gibbons Public Schools

More About the Author

Pamela Edwards was born in 1948 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada but didn't stay long. Until the age of 18, she never lived in one place for more than two years. She has been lucky enough to have lived in some different countries. Thanks to being short, and a little insecure due to that nomadic youth, she believes she's never forgotten how it feels to be a child.
Her inspirations and supporters always have been her husband, Bob and her children, Ian and Victoria.
Her first children's book, Oliver Has Something to Say!, was published in March, 2007.

4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Book, January 16, 2012
This review is from: Oliver Has Something to Say! (Hardcover)
My wife and I got this book from the library. We really enjoyed and could relate to it. Our second child, who has minor speech issues, was continually cut off by his older sister and others at times (similar to what occurs in the book). The book advocates listening to children and allowing them to expresss themselves. A funny and cute read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yet another "Aren't Teachers Wonderful" pamphlet, January 19, 2011
This review is from: Oliver Has Something to Say! (Hardcover)
Poor Oliver...can't get a word in edgewise. He's a cute little guy, but add this book to the growing pile of children's books that are preaching the same (silly) message: teachers are the only people who can listen - really listen - to your children, and guide them along the path to self-expression, self-actualization, and all the other "-self"s that our kids apparently need.

I think this book was written as a warning to parents: once your kids get into the hands of the public education system, they're going to turn into monsters.

Do not buy.
