Book Description

3 and up
Readers and listeners who have delighted in Diane Murrell's earlier picture book, Tobin Learns to Make Friends, will welcome her latest book written for and addressing some of the major issues faced by all children, but particularly so by those with autism spectrum disorders. Oliver the Onion doesn't like himself. But when he decides to try on the "look" of a tempting-looking orange, he soon realizes that he cannot run away from who he is but should instead celebrate his uniqueness. Oliver Onion is written for 4- to 10-year-olds but the colorful illustrations and heartfelt message will appeal to children and adults alike. A discussion guide helps teachers and others engage children in thoughtful exploration of the book.

his sensitive and heart-warming story emphasizes the importance of a strong sense of self and self-acceptance the very foundation upon which our children must develop. A great story to prepare our children for the challenges in today's diverse society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!, January 13, 2005
This review is from: Oliver Onion: The Onion Who Learns to Accept and Be Himself (Hardcover)
What a wonderful story, and a wonderful way to teach children how to accept themselves, and others for who they are. Great lessons on not "judging a book by its cover". The illustrations are breath-taking! I highly recommend this to the teacher as well as the parent. It has become a favorite in my child's library.

Great book. I use it during my social skills classes and the kids truly catch on to the concept of the orange peel being a facade and the bully Orange. It is a longer book with lots of words, so for younger children it can be shortened by eliminating some of the sentences. I love the help in the back for discussion topics and questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oliver OOOWWWIEEEE, July 13, 2007
This review is from: Oliver Onion: The Onion Who Learns to Accept and Be Himself (Hardcover)
This book will be on my class bookshelf when school resumes, I found it a valuable resource for helping the young child to understand and cope with this disability. The easy to read text coupled with the colorful illustrations is a really "interest grabber" a big plus for the 3-7 age group and Oliver...has these qualities. I will see children telling the story back and drawing their own representations of this great selection. Excellent for 3-7+ pre-reader and reader.
