I couldn't get into Dickens in high school, I guess my maturity level just wasn't there. But I bought this classic for my home schooling 6th grade daughter, and vowed to read it no matter what. Well, after the first chapter, I was hooked. And she really loved it too. We read it much faster than I had anticipated, considering the language and size of the book. Highly recommended!

This is a real page-turner if you like Dickens' style. Memorable characters, such as robber Bill Sykes, his dog Bull's-eye, Mr. Bumble, and Mr. Grimwig. Oliver Twist, the character, is adorable. The only thing that marred the enjoyment of this book for me were the superfluous commas. Haven't checked to see if they erroneously appear in other editions.

We purchased this book for a granddaughter who performed in a production of "Oliver" as Oliver Twist and did a fantastic job. She will keep the book as a remembrance from us for enjoying her performance.

The story of Oliver Twist is a great read for anybody of any age. The story has many memorable characters that are fleshed out in detail with all the goods and bads. You will get hooked and you will want to know the story of young Oliver Twist and the journey he takes

Pure hearted Oliver, under classed and orphaned!,
This review is from: Oliver Twist (Sterling Classics) (Hardcover)
The book calls public attention to contemporary ills through an unromantic portrayal of criminals and their sordid lives in 19th-century England. Oliver is born into a life of poverty and misfortune when he is orphaned at birth by his mother's death and his strangely missing father. As a hungry orphan he is trapped in a life of squalid poverty living in decrepit slums surrounded by evil men, thieves, and misfits. In the midst of corruption Oliver avoids a life of crime and emerges pure-hearted. He steers away from evil people and eventually has a positive ending with others who are kind to him. As an orphan myself, I was greatly inspired by Oliver's passive nature and ability to survive on his own. I liked the fact that difficult beginnings for many orphans can have positive endings and I thought about this a great deal when writing Adoption Detective.

I purchased this book after watching the PBS series. It is a great book, not as lengthy as "Little Dorritt" and quite entertaining. As usual, the villain gets punished, and all ends well.
Highly recommended for all ages |
