Based on a later edition, August 17, 2009
This review is from: Oliver Twist (Norton Critical Editions) (Paperback)
Dickens is incomparable to other 19th century writers and Oliver Twist is just one of many of his great moral novels. Twist was written to shock the English middle classes, so much of his humor is relegated to exposing the injustices of the Poor Laws and English workhouses of the mid 1830's. This edition is based on Dickens' final wishes and his last attempt at updating his classic. The Norton Critical Edition always provides great context and criticism, however I always love a great scholarly introduction, which this edition lacks. Also, it's always nice to read the first published edition in serial form, which was how people at the time initially experienced it. For these two reasons I'm partial to the Penguin classic editions. Still, this is a great early novel of a genius still in development.

Oliver's Progress, May 31, 2005
This review is from: Oliver Twist (Norton Critical Editions) (Paperback)
The Twist tale, much like all "classics" is fairly well known. This edition is good because of all the extras. There are critical reviews, illustrations and a good map, and a very clear editor.
