Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-The fussy eater from Oliver's Vegetables (1996) and Oliver's Fruit Salad (1998, both Orchard) is back. This time, Aunt Jen assumes Oliver doesn't like milk when she sees him drinking orange soda for breakfast. She takes him on a full day at the farm, with the promised reward of a "yummy scrummy milk shake" at the end. With each farm animal they encounter, another adjective is added to the milk shake, and the resulting "yummy scrummy fruity frothy icy nicy tip-top tasty dreamy creamy milk shake" is slurped up enthusiastically by Oliver when they get home. He then asks his mother if he can have another one instead of his usual milk that night. It turns out he was only out of milk for breakfast because he used it all in his cereal. Bartlett's soft, childlike, gouache illustrations will delight the storytime crowd. Oliver is a charmer.

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. Oliver is not an adventurous eater, as children found out in Oliver's Vegetables (1995) and Oliver's Fruit Salad (1998). In this new book, his aunt jumps to the conclusion that he doesn't like milk, perhaps because her own daughter is so outspoken on the subject or because she sees Oliver drinking orange soda for breakfast. An object lesson is just the thing for these milk-haters, so off they go to a farm for fresh ingredients to make milk shakes. Lively farm animals and the round-faced children tumble across the pages as the aunt drives homes her point. Wholesome milk and blueberries make the most "yummy scrummy fruity frothy icy nicy tip-top tasty dreamy creamy milk shake" ever. The vivid art adds a sensual feel to the text, and in a completely childlike conclusion, Oliver explains the real reason he had orange soda for breakfast--he'd used up the milk on his cornflakes.
