4.0 out of 5 stars Olivia......Giving you smooth and rough all in one
This cd from olivia is probably one of the hottest cds out from any R+B female singer right now. There is no way to get bored with this cd because she just gives different sides of the hip/r+b world. This is another artist trying to take the rap/sing write/produce control like some astists such as Missy, Lauryn hill, wyclef, etc.. Moving on to the tracks on the album...

Clive Davis chose this album to be the first released from his J Records label. I say he couldn't have made a bigger mistake.

He wanted to give Olivia broad appeal by having numerous genres on this album, which all too many record execs make the mistake of doing these days out of the fear of not selling a lot. The ghetto princess persona is so played out, and...

Moving on to the tracks on the album. What is good?

*(1/5(sorry excuse) - 5/5(best thing since ice cream))*

1-(4/5)-- This first single sets things off. The beat and flow match and couldnt be better coming form a new comer. 2-(4/5)-- This is probably one of the edgiest songs on the album. This is olivia telling someone to grab the camcorder and get ready for some action. Not for young ears but this is another tight rap/sing song with a good flow and beat.(might be the next single)

3-(3/5)-- Fastest track on the album with olivia telling a brother how much she is feeling him. She holds back nothing when explainging why. You might not be suprised at first listen since she is singing so fats but after a few listens u will see. Nice beat...sounds liek rodney jerkins.

4-(5/5)-- A slow jam that takes it to the edge. One of teh best slow songs on the album. The base line beat along with the melody makes this a song for repeat. About being confused with someone.

5-(4/5)-- One of the smoothest tracks on the album that shows a completly different side of olivia. This is nothing short of bedroom music with the chinese chimes and gituar base line going. 6-(4/5)--A cool midtempo track with gituars and organs playing in the background about olivia not taking any woop-T-woo(nonsense) from her lover.

7-(4/5)-- Olivia takes it down south on this one. Not like otehr down south joints you heard before. This one is on the R+B tip but the beat and everything is tight. Think "whats your fantasy"(the R+B remix).

8-(3/5)-- This is a cool mid-tempo track that sounds like somethign tracy chapman could sing. She flips it once again talking about awaiting her mans arival from jail and making it through hard times.

9-(2/5)-- Midtempo/Hip-hop beat about what it takes to get with her in the club and what u wont get if u dont come correct.

10-(3/5)--Another smooth slow jam that takes her in a different direction. This is about meeting your soulmate. Her voice is real smooth on this one. 11-(3/5)-- Another slow jam that takes it there. Olivia saying..."Once you view the cat, you never turning back". That should tell you where this song is going. Nice slow jam.

12-(3/5)-- This is olivia and label mate jimmy sharing vocals over a slow jam(ballad). Talkign about mesing up in a relationship and not being able to turn back.

Overall, Olivia gave you a little bit of everything that she was feeling musicall, lyrically, and emotionally. this will probably be one of the best R+B debuts to drop in a while. I give her credit for writing all the songs/rhymes and taking control over so much of it. Her singing is not as powerful as someone like whitney houston but smooth and strong like sade or zhane. If you like R+B and Hip-hop then its no reason for you not to check this out. If you dont...listen and it just might get u into it as well. Dont sleep on this one.

Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Olivia- "You Got The Damn Thing!", May 29, 2001
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
This CD is Tight! I Love Olivia's style. Bad girl lyrics on some songs, beautiful melodies on others. It's a great blend. My personal favs are "Bizounce" (Of Course! It was this song that first introduced me to her), "Are You Capable?" (Tight as All!), "You Got The Damn Thing" (My FAVORITE! I feel a strong urge to dance when I hear this one!) "It's On Again" (Lovely, Slowly, and Sensual) "Woop-T-Woo" (Sorta a softer version of Bizounce) "When 2 Souls Touch" (Another beautiful soft one) "Lower 2 My Heart" (Sexxxxy Baby! Need I say More?) "Look Around" (A great duet with a guy I've never heard of but sure I will here more of in the future) Pick up Olivia's self titled debut right away! After all, she's got the damn thing you're looking for! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Olivia Is Holding Down the Fort! Don't Sleep On Her., June 13, 2001

Lamar Sanders (Walterboro, SC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
Olivia is the best new female singer and rapper out right now which she proved with her first single "Bizounce" which went to #4 on Billboard R&b charts. Her album is welled blended together with smoothed R&B ballads and R&b hiphop flavor tracks(which some showcase her rap skills . Here is the run down, 1.Bizounce-starts out with her incredible rapping skills then into her smooth singing voice, 2.Are U Capable-Her new single which is sure to be all over the charts, and showcase both skills, with rapping then flips it to singing. This song emphasizes what she wants,3.You Got The Damn Thing-fast hot track which will make you wanna dance. It was suppose to be the next single, but everyone has a club song out right now, 4.Silly B***ch In Love-smoothed R&B ballad which talks about silly women being in love with a player and a scrub, 5.It's On Again-one of the most beautiful ballad I ever heard. Her voice is so seductive, it will make you reminisce about a past love, 6.Woop-t-!Woo-is a song which she fed up with her man nonsense and she ask him to choose between her or his friends, 7.Whoadie-talks about her man and tells him how she feel about him,it has that dirty south vibe. 8.Til' He Comes Home-a song that she talks about keeping it real with her man while he's on the run and wait for his return. The rap verse on this song is hot, 9.Bring Da Roof Down-A club song which is hot because she also rap and sing in this one, 10.When 2 Souls Touch-A nice R&b ballad which expresses the eleglance of love, 11.Lower 2 My Heart-a R&b ballad with elements of jazz which she's anticipating for her lover to not keep her waiting, 12.Look Around- a duet with labelmate Jimmy Cozier which talks about a relationship going through some problems. Nice Duet by Olivia. It obvious Olivia is going grab attention from everyone, so everyone who like R&b and hiphop need to purchase this album because it is hot.(If it wasn't I wouldn't waste my time writing this review)

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good album....really slept on!!, November 20, 2003
By
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
Olivia was the first act signed to J Records, the now booming record label headed by Clive Davis, former head of Arista Records. Many people slept on this diva, because her video got mediocre rotation on BET and MTV, and her song were barely heard on radio.

Nevertheless, true R&B fans will not want to miss this album. Olivia is most known for her first single "Bizounce", which got decent airplay. I have heard this song more often as recent as late 2002, which is sad, because this song is really good. It has some nice, strong, divafied lyrics (I'm about to bizounce, I can't take this s*** no more...picture frame broken daddy, 'cause I can't trust you...I'm riding higher now, so n**** f*** you.) Wow!! If that isn't real, I don't know what is!!

Other uptempo songs that are worth listening to include the steamy "Are U Capable", the second single. This one is more sensual, showing Olivia to be an experienced sex kitten who doesn't want to deal with rookies ("Can you kiss below the border while I run the camcorder tonight?") 'Nuff said. And that's not the strongest line. She also comes hard with some decent rapping skills in both songs. "Bring Da Roof Down" is a nice club track with some more rapping from Ms. Olivia. This song got some play in some clubs up in Chicago, and rightfully so. It's definitely a party album.

The slower songs work exceptionally. My personal favorite is "Silly B**** In Love"....Classic! It starts off hard ("See, there's two things you don't f*** with....a girl's dough, and her heart"). Olivia plays the ghetto queen role well, then delivers sultry singer next with her vocals on this song. "Lower 2 My Heart" is a slow bumping, candle-burning song that is a definite love-making cut. One listen and you will be like, wow. "Look Around", featuring labelmate Jimmy Cozier, is a nice duet with some lovely vocals. Wonderfully produced and written. "It's On Again" is a nice song, that's not too sexy, but sensual enough to put you in a loving mood and actually enjoy it.

The only problems I have with this album is some of the choices for album tracks. "You Got the Damn Thing" is quite irritating to me, and it's not the easiest thing to follow. The single of this song, which had a sample from Guy's "I Like", was actually more listenable and should have been included. "Whoadie" has some nice ad-libs from Olivia, but doesn't move me at all. Even a cameo rap from a then-unknown Petey Pablo couldn't help me like this song.

Nevertheless, Olivia has really put out a stron debut album. I'm looking forward to some more in the future!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Its About Time, May 15, 2001
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
I thought this cd would never come out! I got the single "Bizounce" and I wrote a review for that also, now Olivia is hot, I'm not downplaying it. As Billboard music put it she's got "the mouth of a bad girl, but the voice of an angel" this girl is the complete package, great voice, smooth moves, and a voice that will leave ya pheening. The beats are phat, J records does a superb job of production. Olivia's voice has just the right type of feel for the songs on the album. The cd has the classic compents of R&B with slow melodic beats to the songs that keep ya jamming. If this is just one of the new artists released on J records, I can't wait to see what other new talent they'll be promoting. OK, this is the song and my review for each of them in 25 words or less: 1. Bizounce - this is the ish, can't get enough of it 2. Are U Capable - hook on this is soft, strong song, similar to Adina Howards "Freak" 3. You Got That Damn Thing - dont know, maybe it will grow on me 4. Silly B*#!@% In Love - a hard version of Mary J. Blige's "Not Gon' Cry" 5. It's On Again- Absolutely lovely ballad, something you'd play for your girl 6. Woop-t-Woo - classic love bash song 7. Whoadie - this song will keep ya bouncing 8. 'Til He Comes Home- this song's beginning had me cracking up, but the story of the song seems realisitc, real thug luv 9. Bring Da Roof Down- the beat is similar to the feel of Toya's "I Do" another clubbin song 10. When 2 Souls Touch- yet another love song you play for your girl, its sweet 11. Lower 2 My Heart- Love Song, the scene and feel plays out like Janet Jacksons "Anytime, Anyplace" 12. Look Around (duet w/Jimmy Cozier) another love song, nice way to close out.

And that's it peoples, hope my review was helpful for yall.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the Haters, February 26, 2009
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
Ok, I've read a bunch of the 1 and 2 star reviews, and I just want to say that I think it is horrible how you people can trash this album just based on the way Olivia looks. It may be perfectly true that she does look like a man, but we are not reviewing her as a model; we are reviewing her as a singer. Plus, you cannot help the way you look, so that is no reason to discount someone as an artist. As far as this album goes, I don't know why people say that this woman (and yeah, I really do think she's a woman) can't sing. I have taken voice lessons and have been in choirs for over half of my life. No, she is no Beyonce, but she does have a pleasant voice. The tracks on this album are also fairly good.

Track 1 5 stars: Rough and raw, this track tells a tale that many can relate to, that of a broken heart.

Track 2 3 stars: This song tells of somewhat kinky sex acts and has an upbeat feel.

Track 3 3 stars: Maybe this track isn't the best on the album, but it's upbeat, pop feel is a decent change from the norm.

Track 4 4 stars: This is a slow R&B type track that also tells a familiar story of heart break.

Track 5 5 stars: This is a beautiful ballad that has an extremely relaxing quality about it.

Track 6 3 stars: This song has a slightly faster tempo than the previous one, and is based on an original song concept of men telling girls what they want to hear.

Track 7 1 star: This fast-paced song may add a bit of spice to the beats on the album, but the lyrics are rather boring.

Track 8 4 stars: This is a song about a serious subject that has an oddly contrasting upbeat feel. It tells of a relationship where the woman is loyal to the man, no matter what he has done.

Track 9 1 star: Another club banger with dull lyrics, but it has a nice beat.

Track 10 4 stars: This song allows Olivia to show off the lower half of her vocal range, which she maintains with as much vigour as the higher portion. It is a mid-tempo track that is fairly relxing.

Track 11 4 stars: The lyrics on this track may be a bit lax, but Olivia's vocal skills shine.

Track 12 3 stars: This is a nice duet, but I don't like its placement on the album. If it had been somewhere in the middle, I would have given it 4 stars. It is an extremely depressing note to end the album on, although it is a very well-written song.

All in all, this may not be the best album ever created, but it is certainly worth a listen by any R&B fans. I just don't understand why so many people seem to hate her, but if it's because they think she's a transexual, please don't pay them any attention; you might be missing out on one of your favorite CDs if you listen to people who have nothing better to do than put down others based on their looks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut, August 19, 2005
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
I think Olivia has great vocal versatility. Many people don't like that in an artist, but I find it refreshing. Bizounce caught my ear and made me want to hear what else she could do. I liked the album. It's more explicit than I would care for, but she works it. I've been waiting on the second album. I just hope it's not a G-Unit album. "Twist It" is okay, but she's not very good with the club-type songs. R&B songs with a tight beat is what she does best. She has a great voice. Clive Davis signed her because she sang every note on the chromatic scale in his office. I think she was just overshadowed by Miss Keyes. I'm looking forward to the new album. People should check Avant's song "Seems To Be" which features Olivia. It's a great song.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Bizounce" To This Great New Debut!!, May 18, 2001
By
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
I bought this CD the day it came out. I liked "Bizounce" when I first heard it on the radio, and the explicit version was better than expected!! Other good songs on this album include "You Got That Damn Thing", "Silly B**** In Love" [and the ballad "When 2 Souls Touch". Beware; that parental advisory label is there for a reason!! Olivia holds nothing back (including naughty words) on any of her songs. The two songs I didn't care for were "'Til He Comes Home", where she is praising her criminal boyfriend, and "Bring Da Roof Down", a silly club song. But these 2 songs are not enough to bring the rest of this album. Check out this CD if you like Aaliyah (that's who I thought was singing "Bizounce" when I first heard it). Overall, a great debut from a new (and naughty) talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Olivia is "Capable" of a grammy!!!, July 9, 2001
By
This review is from: Olivia (Audio CD)
Many people don't truly know the ability of this young, sexy soultry singer from NY. She is the best new female talent to come out since Aaliyah. I mean song after song makes this album more appealing to me every time I listen to it. From the hot down south joint "Whoadie" featuring the North Carolina native rapper Petey Pablo to my favorite cut "Til He Comes Home" I can't skip a song. She not only has the skills of a true "MC" she has the vocal ability that can compete with some of the biggest divas. She came hard with the 2001 fed up women's anthem "Bizounce" and then again delivers with the hip-hop flavored club-bangin hit "Are U Capable" the question is Olivia capable? Damn sure, she's capable of being a Grammy award winner. This in my opinion is the best cd of 2001. It is so well-rounded with something not only for the 13-21 range but for the 30-45 range. Teens, Parents, and Grandparents will be bumping this album for the years to come and don't let the lackluster charting of the album fool you. Olivia is here to stay. "Are U Capable" is sure to put it back in the top 40. Now for those of you who don't comprehend. GIT DIS ALBUM!!!
