Book Description

May 3, 2001
When Olivia's husband, Johnny, announces "I don't care what color you paint the hall, I'm leaving, " Olivia is understandably devastated. Left with an eccentric troop of builders camping in her back garden, a ten-year-old daughter with an attitude, and a neurotic neighbor intent on foisting cast-off men in her direction, Olivia's dream home is suddenly less than dreamy...

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

This is a mood lifter, this story of a woman left to cope with her precocious 10-year-old daughter when her husband decides to pack and run. Olivia must also cope with a house full of builders who are slowly making progress on reconstructing her house. Along comes Suzy Aitchison, an outstanding reader, who makes these true-to-life characters more wonderous than the printed word could do. There's so much life and energy in her every phrase. Best of all, each person is so well differentiated that we don't need to hear their names to know who is speaking. Aitchison plays the 10-year-old girl, a dashing male neighbor, a Greek carpenter, old women, suave urbanites. The author and she were very fortunate to have settled on each other's work for this excellent production. J.P. 4.0 out of 5 stars Olivia Makes Her Own Luck, December 29, 2005

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Olivias Luck (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book, although I read sections over a long period of time. It could have used a bit of trimming; there are many plotlines including one about her rat of a husband who leaves her in the middle of a home renovation for a surprising reason that is revealed near the end of the book; one that tackles the complicated relationship she has with her mother; a storyline about a pregnant friend; and some werid goings on with the handymen camped out on her property, but all are filled with humor.

I loved the characters, especially Olivia and her eccentic neighbors, one of whom she mistakenly thinks tried to kidnapped her daughter. The reader is made to wonder just who will win her heart, the neighbor who composes beautiful music, a handsome and sexy handyman or her husband who doesn't seem to know what he wants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!!, January 11, 2002

Very funny. Some unrealistic storylines, but over all it was an extremely good read. Couldn't put it down until I finished it.

4.0 out of 5 stars a " must-read" for married women everywhere, November 20, 2002

If you liked "Bridget Jones'Diary" - you'll enjoy this tale of the painfully realistic Olivia's journey through abandonment, disbelief, insecurity and incredulity at the way life's changes can stir and shake you up. The characters are instantly likeable - from the crowd of rogue builders who protectively watch over Olivia's emotianal dirty Laundry as it is paraded through the neighbourhood, to Olivia's smart and sassy daughter and friends who watch Olivia's transformation from complacent housewife to jibbering wreck to sought-after soulmate. A great read, contains laugh aloud situations and leaves you wanting more
