Messiaen’s biographer, Alain Périer, wrote: "Probably never in the history of composition has a work been written under such improbable circumstances." Messiaen was a prisoner in a Nazi war camp in 1940. A German officer gave him paper and pencil and he wrote this profoundly moving chamber work dedicated "In homage to the Angel of the Apocalypse." Eventually, he and some fellow musicians were allowed to play the work before an audience of 5,000 prisoners! "Never," Messiaen recalled, "have I been listened to with so much attention and understanding." The ensemble incanto was founded in 1988 on the occasion of the Messiaen Festival in Hanover.
