Gr 4-6-This Disney-esque debut follows a rare California sea otter from freedom to captivity and back again. Captured by an illegal kelp harvester and sold to Kris, an animal park's compassionate keeper, Ollie meets wisecracking macaw Bingo; Fandango, an aging bull seal with a French accent; a timorous sea turtle; and a trio of sea otters (including winsome Sadie) raised in captivity-all of whom Ollie persuades to come with him when he makes a break for the wild. Since his companions know next to nothing about living on their own, they fall into a series of misadventures, culminating in an all-too-close encounter with Tooth, a great white shark with a particular fondness for otter. Breaking occasionally into song (lyrics provided: music available on a Web site) or prayer to "The Deep Blue Sea," the motley animal crew survives all challenges and is at last rescued by Kris, who helps Ollie rejoin his parents and takes the others back to safety. Williamson casts his loosely plotted tale into short chapters, each of which is headed by a photographed otter commenting on what's coming up ("Don't call me squid butt!" "A good friend is even better than scratching your armpit," etc.) in a dialogue balloon. Closer to Free Willy than The Incredible Journey, this novel offers young readers some mild humor, a dash of consciousness-raising, familiar character types, and a comfortably predictable outcome.
