This Olympus ME-51S Stereo Microphone was purchased for use with an Olympus DS-30 Digital Voice Recorder to record my college lectures to be offered on my Website and via podcasting services, including Apple iTunes, Yahoo! and PodBlaster. I wanted high quality audio recording equipment to give a professional sound to my presentations, and the DS-30 had already been doing well with its own, built-in stereo mic. Unfortunately, some of the rooms in which I lecture have the acoustical qualities of a haunted house, complete with unfortunately troubled, noisy souls dedicated to howling incessantly.

Hence, I bought the microphone to clip onto my tie so I could attach the recorder to my belt with a belt-clip case available from Olympus. The DS-30 has three recording modes: "lecture hall," "conference," and "dictation." (The DS-30 also has four recording quality levels, including "XQ" stereo, which I always use.) With the microphone, I was able to take the gain down from "lecture hall" to "conference," which cut the ambient noise level considerably. I was somewhat worried that the microphone being so close to my tie would cause occasional rubbing sounds as the mic hit the fabric, but in more than 50 hours of recording so far with the mic I have noticed that only twice while preparing the lectures for broadcast.

I have an Olympus WS-300 which I liked for recording classes in grad school - it picked up just about everything. The addition of this microphone make the unit into a really amazing piece of equipment. This mic has a significantly higher output than the built-in mics and better frequency respsonse and overall balance.

We bought this to use with our WS-300M to record a class. We thought the stereo would result in a better quality recording. In the end, we set the recorder to MONO (HQ) because the speaker moves his head and the sound travels from one channel to the other! Good quality but distracting. Save your money and buy the mono mic. The quality is excellent in either setting.

Buy the way, in case you miss it, this mic does come with a cable to connect it to the recorder.

I bought this to use with a GoPro Hero2. I also tested it against a Sony ECM-DS70P. The Olympus was more sensitive and picked up speech and ambient sounds more effectively than the Sony. The Sony is a decent product, but the Olympus is a better performer. I don't think you can find a better performing non-powered Mic.

I purchased this mic to use with my GoPro HD Hero2 camera. I do a lot of track events with my car, and it's just too quiet to hear anything aside from wind noise with the internal mic. Few folks on an online forum I'm a member of have this and seem to like it, so I gave it a shot... and it's fantastic. It's very compact, so it's easy to tuck into places. Handles loud volumes very well without distorting. I've had it mounted under the hood, on the rear bumper right next to the exhaust pipe (loud!) and buried in the interior. Seems to have a nice full range and comes in crystal clear.

Totally happy with it.

preface: Photography/video is JUST a hobby

If you have a dSLR with a 3.5mm mic input, this might be a great addition to add stereo to your videos. I decided to go with this microphone rather than a hot shoe mountable mic for a few reasons: the cost seemed reasonable and the portability. I can put this microphone and a right angle adapter in a mentos box that fits in my pant pocket. Since recording audio can happen at any time, being able to access the microphone and attach can be completed in less than a minute. This might have been the case if I was carrying the microphone in my camera bag. Perhaps my needs will change in the future, but this works for me right now.

The tricky part about recording video directly rather than mixing (yes... I'm too lazy to edit at this time) is that you have to tweak the audio levels before you start recording. Clipping will happen if you're using auto levels or set too high. Wind noise is also an issue since there's no screen.

It would have been nice if Olympus included a carrying pouch, but again, the mentos box works fine.

As far as sound quality goes. This microphone definitely pics up more ambient noise than the builtin microphone in my Canon 60D. The audio separation seems fine and is definitely more realized when wearing headphones.

I connect the ME-51S to an Olympus DS-2400 Dictation recorder (142015) and put it in the middle of a conference table - having two active recording heads, perpendicular to the plane of the recorder, it records both sides of the table quite well. You can plug it directly into the top of the recorder, or connect it via an extension cable. It also includes a removable clip, but it is not "noise canceling", so don't plan to wear this on your lapel while recording. It works best if the recorder is in Conference mode when you use this mic.
