SmartMedia is sold under several brands. Olympus branded SmartMedia allows you to take "panorama" shots. Essentially, you take multiple shots while making sure to overlap edges. You then reassemble these multiple shots using the "Camedia" software that came with your Olympus camera. The difference is that when an Olympus brand SmartMedia card is used, your digital camera keeps exposure settings constant across these multiple shots; which makes for a consistent panorama when you reassemble the individual shots via your computer.

This is a nice feature, but not a feature most of us use often; for example, on a recent two week trip, I took 220 shots of which only 12 were panorama. If you are going to purchase multiple SmartMedia cards, you might be able to do with just one or two Olympus brand cards - especially since they cost more than other brands. I use two other brand SmartMedia cards, and save my Olympus brand cards for when panorama shots present (since you can switch the cards out at anytime - unlike traditional camera film).

Also to realistically determine what the price premium is, check prices for Olympus and other brand SmartMedia not only here, but also at other popular commercial sites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent card - excellent price, April 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Olympus 32 MB SmartMedia Card (Personal Computers)
Soon after I bought my Olympus D450 Digital Zoom over a year ago, I went and bought the Olympus 32MB Smart Media card to compliment the 8 MB card that came with the carmera. I used the 8 MB card for the very first few pictures I took, then replaced it with the 32 MB card as soon as it arrived. That 8 MB card has not seen the inside of my D450 since.

There's only one thing I ask of a memory card - that it work. Not just the first time, but day after day, month after month, year after year. My one year old plus Olympus 32 MB card has doen exactly that. It works flawlessly with my D450, and my HP Photosmart P1100 printer/card reader has no problems with it either. I have taken thousands of pictures using nothing but my 32MB card for recording images, and it is still works as well as the day I bought it.

While Olympus traditionally charges a LOT for their accessories, their Smart Media cards are now very competively priced when compard to San Disk and Viking. Personally, I like buying Olympus brand accessories for the simple reason that they always work with my Olympus camera! And if they should fail for some odd reason, Olympus will stand behind their products, which is why I purchased an Olympus to begin with.

Just recently, due to the very nice price available from Amazon.com, I bought a second Olympus 32 MB card to serve along side the old warhorse that been in my camera for a year and a half. A single 32 MB card isn't quite enough for vacation photography, so I hope to be a bit more shutter happy now that I have the second card.

For all you Olympus digital fans out there, this is the Smart Media card you need!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST PRICE AROUND!, May 8, 2001

I recently purchased a D-490Z along with this card and the batteries (see my other reviews). I did shop around for "digifilm" and this is by far the best price that I've seen by a large margin. If you have an Olympus, you will be certain that this is fully compatible for panorama shots, etc. This card will hold 22 SHQ pics or 320 SQ pics. Combined with the 8 MB that comes with the camera, this should hold most people. This got my money.

I own an Oly C2100 and love digital over film! The fact that you can delete, view, do movie/audio....its a lot to remember. I have the 8mb smartmedia that came with the Oly and like everyone, found out that a plain 32mb smartmedia card wouldn't let me select 'panorama' just when I needed it, made me HOT. I took the the shots and they where OK but the lighting did change a bit between frames. I wouldnt have bought the 'plain' card had I know before( but 'If' and 'Ida' were playing this card game). The second issue is the 'scratch factor'. I have only removed the 8mb card 6 times and I notice certain areas of the metal surface beginning to wear. Take care to insert/remove the card gentley and at the proper orientation(square) as the clearance in the the camera slot and reader slot is too tight. I find that setting the image size down one size (most 2.1 megapixals default at 1200x1600) allow more photo storage and one less step to take when emailing and printing. Also take a lot of shots and enjoy as this media (camera/card) will be obsolete before we know it.

5.0 out of 5 stars bought wrong kind - check your camera!, February 25, 2002
This review is from: Olympus 32 MB SmartMedia Card (Personal Computers)
I wanted to buy a new smart media card for my digital camera. I thought the 32mb cards would be great. Only thing is my camera, 2 years old, won't support the card. It will only recognize cards up to 16 mb. Please be sure to check your cameras guidlines before purchasing accessories!

Today with lot's of storing media running around, you must be careful into choosing the right one that's for you, and also, you must check your camera manual so you can know up to how much memory it can stand, some time ago I bought a polaroid PDC-640 cam, and it wont take smartmedia cards larger than 8MB, so be careful in choosing!

Had been bidding on E-bay, and was able to purchase 2 cards for the price of one of theirs. In fact, had lost several bids. Exactly what you advertised, and what I wanted

5.0 out of 5 stars Panorama Function DOES Work with Other Brands, March 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Olympus 32 MB SmartMedia Card (Personal Computers)
I own three different brands of flash (Olympus, SanDisk, and Viking). All three of them utilize the panaromic feature.

Currently, the Viking and SanDisk card are priced exactly the same--which is a lot less expensive than this Olympus card.
