Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The D595 Zoom digital camera is an exciting new addition to the Olympus range. It gives enthusiasts the ease of use associated with automatic functions but still allows plenty of room for creativity and experimentation with full manual control. With 5.0 million pixels and TruePic TURBO technology, images are guaranteed to be rich and highly defined. A bright 3x zoom lens (35mm equivalent: 38-114mm) adds shooting flexibility. Movies with sound can also be recorded and photos can be viewed on the 1.8-inch color LCD monitor.

The D595 Zoom is an ideal camera for photographers looking for an easy-to-use camera that maintains the option of manual control. With the D595 Zoom, shooting is as easy or as creative as the photographer desires. Users can choose from 15 scene programmes including Fireworks, Portrait, and Night Scene. A special help function describes the selected mode and gives a sample picture to make sure the right one is chosen. Additionally, this camera offers full manual control over the exposure settings enabling photographers free reign to explore their creativity--a feature virtually unheard of in a camera of this category. Shooting flexibility is increased by the Super Macro mode that permits shots from less than an inch away.

5.0 million pixels equip this model with the power to capture images in extraordinary detail. A 3x zoom lens (35mm equivalent: 38-114mm) brings subjects in close and ensures superior results. The TruePic TURBO image processor means users can not only look forward to generating brilliant images but also fast camera start-up and operating speeds.

With the new special "re-size with frame illustration" editing function, the photographer can choose from a variety of templates, directly on the camera. Being PictBridge compatible, images can then be printed directly on any printer supporting this standard, such as the Olympus P-10, without needing to go via a PC.

The D595 Zoom can also record movies, with length of film dependent on xD card capacity. Results can then be presented on the integrated 1.8-inch LCD monitor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great upgrade to 5 megapixels, April 25, 2005

This review is from: Olympus D595 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I had bought this camera as a replacement for my "old" 2MP Olympus, and I must say that Olympus have done a great job. The pre-set dial on the back makes selecting shooting modes much easier, with choices of Auto-shoot, programmed auto-shoot (where you can create your settings)Manual, movie mode (Quick Time movies with sound)self-portrait, landscape/portrait, sport, night scene, and landscape. The viewfinder (an rarity with point and shoot digital cameras these days), is a little small, but does the job. The screen is incredibly sharp and gives you a real sense of how the shot will turn out. It is very nice in the hand, and very stable to use (no more camera shake!) In short, a crisp, clean, sweet camera, and well-recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars You CAN change the default settings, October 11, 2005
This review is from: Olympus D595 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
Too many rumors about not being able to reset default settings of the Olympus D-595 Digital Cameras. Here's how you do it. Click: OK>Setup>All Reset>OFF. Now anything you change won't reset itself when you turn it off. I hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera for the price, September 12, 2005

This review is from: Olympus D595 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
We purchased this from CompUSA when it was on sale for $170. For the price, I was surprised by the manual settings and the optical zoom. Even though I say megapixels don't mean much, it's nice to have the extra pixels of a 5MP. From pressing the power button to having the first shot taken, it is about 5 seconds. In 10 seconds, I can fire 5 shots without the flash on the manual setting. Not to bad for a point and shoot without a continous shooting feature. The 19 shooting modes seem to work pretty well.

The video is only 320x240 which isn't anything special. It will take a video until the card is full (no time limit).

The camera is very easy to use switching from shooting to viewing mode. The functions work as expected. It is definitely much easier to use than some of the older Olympus cameras. It's easier to use, IMO, than many of the Kodak cameras as well.

It uses xD memory cards which aren't very standard. We were able to get a 256MB card for $35 which isn't too bad.

As for the person complaining about the USB cable: you'll notice the end of the cable that plugs into the camera has 6 pins, while USB only has 4 pins. The reason for this is that the A/V cord plugs into the same jack on the camera as the USB, so it must use the other 2 pins for it.

All in all, this is a good camera for beginners and anyone wanting a sub-$200 P&S that takes decent photos.
