Small and portable
on March 24, 2014
I have numerous flashes, Canon, several 550ex, two 580ex, and one 430ex. I needed something small to use with my OM e 5 and this is perfect for it. The recycle time is very fast, except when used in manual and fired in full. There is where the 3 - 5 second recycle comes in. With the OM5 can easily increase the ISO to increase the reach of the flash. The five stars is not for the price as it seems on the high end the FL 300R is a better flash, from what I have read, and priced lower. I am not rating the price, that would probably be a two star. I did add a star for the "cute" factor as one person described it.
Everyone seems to make a big deal about bounce, and I do use bounce, but most persons will not be able to tell the difference nor know what to look for. In fact they are used to direct flash and to most people that is the norm. This could easily be used professionally in the right hands and I guess the right camera. If you want bounce it is easy to tape a piece of card board on the bottom and guide some of the light up. Bounce is used to diffuse the light so it will not be so harsh. When you do that with a flash you will also have to increase the ISO, lower the shutter speed, or allow more light in with a large aperture, i.e., f/1.4. or increase the light output of the flash which are doable, but in that case go manual all the way.
The reviews here on Amazon are much lower than the ones in B & H for the same flash.
But this little jewel with my OM 5 can be set on auto, set the exposure up one and it will almost get the image right almost all the time. Remember that the "Selective Pattern" also plays a part in getting the right exposure. It does not do high speed flash, but how many people do that? I use it for birds and have done it to stop motion when it is dark. But one can accomplish the same by using a slow shutter and flash to freeze motion.
