Product Description

The Olympus LH-48 Lens Hood is a square-cut lens hood specifically designed for the Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2.0 lens. Due to the threaded design of the lens hood, it can be mounted in any position on the front of the lens to prevent excess light from entering the lens, causing lens flare. The silver metal design perfectly complements the look of the lens itself.

This is one fancy rectangular lens hood. I like it because it is so unusual, and the quality is there,

I too have sticker price shock, but this is no ordinary hood. I work with metal for a living, so the price is in line with not mass produced items.

The design of the surrounding collar is in line with a very wide angle lens, one would not want this to be elevated from the glass by much if any. It sticks out less than a filter.

I have 2 conflicting trains of thought, I'm sure there's a way to get a bayonet mount type plastic hood much like the Sigma Hoods, but when I consider this, it is a much higher quality work of art.

I now have switched over completely to Micro Four Thirds cameras. The 12mm lens that this mounts on is fantastic but not perfect. That is to be expected with very wide angle lenses, regardless of camera format. But nowhere can you find this quality of a hood in the 35mm wanabees.

I would give this 5 stars if it were more affordable or included with the $800 - $900 lens. Just a little disappointed. It's fairly along the lines of buying Canon lenses, very few hoods included.

Since this review is really about the hood, perfectly designed for the lens. Can't be better IMO. Quality off the charts. Does what it is designed for and I recommend it.

Does a good job of protection from flare! Overpriced and should be included with the purchase of the lens. Well built

The worst thing about this is - you cannot put this on or off when a Circular Polarizer filter is on. You have to take the filter off first. It also has a screw to tighten the hood instead of the usual "push and turn to lock" as found in most other hoods. Time consuming to put it on or off. The whole design of the hood looks like an after thought than an integrated design with the lens. I also own Leica/Panasonic micro 4/3 lenses and Olympus needs to learn how to do a better job of designing a hood from those. Leica/Panasonic even includes the hood free. The only reason to buy this is the Olympus 12 mm is a really good lens and the only hood option is this - kind of monopoly.

For M.Zuiko 12mm lens (not Zuiko lens), i.e., for new 2011 Micro 4/3s lens (not for any older plain 4/3s lens). Supposed to be reversible for compact packing.
So if you're looking for the hood for Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2.0 Lens for Micro Four Thirds Cameras, then this is the hood you're looking for (despite the erroneous Amazon "Zuiko" listing).

NB: Olympus has two families of digital lenses: Zuiko (earlier, larger, often professional calibre) and the M.Zuiko (Micro Zuiko) which are typically smaller, lighter, and prosumer calibre. This product is for the superb new prosumer M.Zuiko lens (linked above), even though the product description refers to the older, original Zuiko family of lenses.
