I bought a couple of microphones looking to replace my Plantronics .Audio desktop microphone. Of them were the Koss M-18, Logitech USB Desktop, and this one.
This Olympus was the cheapest of the 3. It's sensitivity is a little low. This helps with canceling a lot of background noise & makes sense as the primary purpose of this mic was usage with digital recorders. However, any dictation where the source is further than 10 inches may not record clearly. I was using the mic with my PC audio card so results may vary when using it with the suggested Olympus recorders.

Better for interviews than the built-in mic on Olympus voice recorders. I have the WS-320M recorder. The ME-12 mic is not as sensitive as the built-in, though. The ME-12 is at its best when dictating, and not as good when recording a lecture from far away.
Works great with an extension cable, and is especially good for recording live interviews. You can move the mic where you want it depending on who's speaking.

Better off without mic,

I married this mic to the Olympus WS-200S Digital Voice Recorder, which by the way plays in stereo. When attaching the mic there was a significant loss of volume, as the system only used one channel rather than stereo. The resulting loss of volume requiered the volume to be turned up during playback increasing backround noise levels. I use this device to record class lectures at the college level. Without the mic I was able to hear student questions from the back clearly. With the mic installed, I could no longer make out all the questions from the high volume related static.

This little microphone works well for me. I've owned it since August and now it's November 3. I use it with my Olympus WS-100 to take notes which I then save to my computer and import it into Dragon Naturally Speaking version 9 Preferred which then produces a Microsoft Word document. I speak into the microphone from about 2 inches away and am really careful with my diction and pronunciation because there is just a little bit of distortion if you over drive it. But with a little work in practice it does what it's supposed to do. Oh, one side note if you do import this into Dragon be aware you will have to make corrections. Sometimes a lot of them but that's based on how you speak. Or maybe that's based on how I speak that's been my experience anyway. But that's not the fault of the microphone.

I purchased this item for my husbands recorder, it works ok but to me it sounds just like recording without the microphone, it doesn't really cancel out a lot of the noise in my opinon...it sounds exactly the same with or without the mic. He thinks that it works "ok".

I have an Olympus digital recorder WS-320M. While the built in condensor mike is OK (records dual track stereo), you do have a problem with ambient noise. This little plug in does eliminate a lot of the background noise, which makes dictation or simple voice recording much easier. It is the best option if your purpose is for voice recording.
Would not recommend it for music. Also price should not exceed $15.00.

Works Great in my Laptop for Skype...,

I was disappointed to see that my new laptop did not have a microphone in it. So I looked around and found this one. It fits nicely into the jack and works well with Skype without being in the way.
I had a buddy do a quality comparison of this microphone and my bluetooth headset and he indicated that the ME-12 was heads and shoulders above the headset. The distance from my mouth to the unit (arms length) is not an issue. It's a great unit at a great price that performs very well.

I bought this to add a microphone to my laptop (for Skype). It works fine, I have a input jack on the right of my laptop.
For proper use, the sound must be directed into the TOP of the mic. So in order for the person to hear me I have to cock my laptop to the side. It would be much nicer if the angle of the head was adjustable so I sit directly in front of my laptop and people hear me.

I've only used this a few times, after buying it on advice of the Nuance (Dragon Naturally Speaking transcription software) website. They said it greatly improved the sound quality for dictation purposes.
And they were RIGHT! Clear as a bell - I even left the recorder ON in my pants pocket (accidentally) and had a relatively clear recording, even though the recorder and mike were INSIDE A CASE! If you use it per their instructions, you'll have crystal clear notes and memos.

I got this microphone for my laptop which does not have a built-in mic. The problem I ran into, and it may not be the microphone's fault, is that with this mic in the computer and sound coming out of the speaker (right next to the mic) I get a ton of feedback and echo.
It is a great little mic though, so it would work well for a recorder or a computer where there is more separation between the mic and the speakers |
