I haven't had a chance to do anything with this other than test it, but it passed with flying colors, clear sound.

The mic adapter secures to the camera hot shoe perfect and the mic attaches easily and stays in place.

The SEMA-1 adapter is something that adds a feature that should have already be built into the E-P2 and E-PL1 - audio input. Even though the camera shoots fantastic video, the audio has always been lacking. With the SEMA-1, you can add audio using the included Olympus mic, or use any third party mic.

The increase in quality is astounding. If you want to record video in a windy environment, you'll want to upgrade to something with a wind cover, as the included mic isn't bad - but not great either. Ideally, the kit would come without a mic and drop in price because $67 is a little steep.

Of course, when the audio adapter is plugged in, you will lose access to the hot shoe - so you'll need to pick what is more important.

If you're shooting video on a PEN without this device, you've no doubt noticed the noise of focus and aperture adjustments. There's just no getting around that with the internal mic - if you're serious about video, you really have to have this thing.

There's not much to it: an adapter that sits on your hot shoe and uses the accessory port to add a mic port. The included mic itself is a dramatic improvement on the internal E-P2 mic, but it's still basically a freebie; the real reason this item is so important is that you can use any mic you desire, and situate it away from the camera. The kit includes an extension cable, and you'll see an immediate reduction in background noise if you decide to use it.

In addition, there's also a little alligator clip which attaches to the extension cable, so you can attach the mic to e.g. a person's clothing.

This accessory shares an annoying quality with the Olympus VF-2 Electronic ViewFinder, which is that it blocks the hot shoe from other use. That means that you won't be able to mount a light or the aforementioned VF2 while using this device, so you'd better be happy with the rear LCD and off-camera lighting when you use it.

I'm docking it a star because of this, and because it's silly that you need to buy this unit at all. While it does get the job done, the price is too high for functionality that really should be included in the body itself.

This is a wonderful attachment for the Olympus EPL-1 - It makes all the difference in the world.
I would like to see an FM transceiver attachment, or a ten meter coax cord made specifically for this device.
I need to wear the mic on the lapel but the cord is not long enough. I'd like to use this mike with a boom and a blimp
for making outdoor vids.
Wear stereo headphones to hear the difference in the comparison videos:
Here are two comparison videos
1) First without the attached mic Sema-1 mic, just the Olympus EPL-1 alone:

2) Plus SEMA-1 mic on Olympus EPL-1

Overall I think this is a great product. It's a highly portable option for people who need a little bit better sound input for video. That said, there's really not much to it, and I don't think the final product justifies the price.

But in practice, I find the microphone to work quite well, and produce sound at a much higher level than the basic, on-camera mic. It fits very easily into a very small pouch in my m43 bag, and weighs almost nothing.

Again, overall a good product that would easily be a 5-star product if it were $15 cheaper.

Works great, but occupies the hot shoe. Had to purchase an accessory bracket to use the adapter with a shotgun microphone. Olympus should have put a 3.5mm mic jack on the camera.

Works great, does exactly what its intended for. The bonus of the olympus mic, that can be used with anything from a computer to an MP3 player is great. I'll be using my own external mics on my setup, but the olympus mic definitely goes in my travel bag.

I received this mic and immediately set it up and shot a 10 min movie of my band. I burned it to DVD and the sound quality was excellent. It picked up all three instruments just great, and we played it back on my studio monitors at full volume with NO; and I mean NO, distortion. Much better than the supplied in-camera mic (which performs pretty well for what it is). I will be purchasing a longer extension cord as the one supplied works just fine, but at 3 ft. it's a little short for some of my applications. The mic adapter secures to the camera hot shoe perfect and the mic attaches easily and stays in place. The kit looks handsome when mounted on the camera; it gives it a "high tech" look. I am very happy with this purchase and I would recommend this mic to anyone with the E-PL1, I just wish Olympus would lower the price. Great product, well built, with a high end quality appearance.

After getting a bargain price on the amazing Olympus Pen E-pl1 camera, I noticed it takes superb pictures, but the sound on the otherwise excellent quality video was a little under-whelming. Noticed all the great reviews for the Sema-1 so I bought this Mic with the expectation of some improved sound quality. Imagine the horror when I reviewed my test footage shot both indoors and out, and I observed the sound quality was noticably Worse with the Mic on then when it was off. Made everything sound tinny and cheap, lost all depth. I went into the camera's menus to look for anything that might help, but I could find nothing. Very disappointing. Also when used on windy or even breezy days you get a more exagerated wind crackle then with the regular mic. Also please note, this mic comes with no wind screens or muff to help this problem. At this price you would assume that would be a given.

The only positives I can see about this mic is the fact you can un-fasten the mic off the camera, and run an extension cord and then clamp the mic closer to what you're filming. Also I like the build quality and the way it fastens tightly to the camera. To those of you who have been praising this mic, please feel free to respond with anyhthing that might help me or others out. I'd be happy to change my review if the poor performance of this mic is due to user error.

*Update* I'm changing my review from 2 to 4 stars. I was way too hard on this mic in my first review, should have spent more time with it before publishing a knee jerk reaction. I just got back from a quick trip spent with family, and when using this mic in a room full of people it really does offer improved sound quality.
