3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Machine, But With Three Major Flaws
The Olympus WS-310M is an incredible machine, especially so since it handles its two functions of digital voice recorder and MP3 music player quite well. I still marvel at the fact that so much power and capability are condensed into such a tiny package. The list of its features go on and on, as do the instructions in its 87 page Instruction Manual. This review is from: Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player (Office Product)
Even though there are some GREAT features on this device, one of the main drawbacks is the microphone. It is located on the right and left sides of the recorder but there are holes for the microphone on the FRONT AND BACK. The recorder is far too thin to stand on end unless it's a perfectly level surface that doesn't move at all. Unless you want to sit there holding the recorder in your hand straight up (which is what I've been doing and don't mind), do NOT get this recorder. Laying it down on your desk or notebook puts the microphone holes in direct contact with your notebook or desk surface. Any sound you make on the desk will be picked up. Also, since it is laying down, half of the microphone is essentially covered, you will have a harder time recording the lecture. Another thing very much worth mentioning is the record time. The product description states that it can record up to 68 hours on LP. On this speed, you will not pick up anything unless you are speaking into the recorder with it mere inches from your face. I leave the recorder on its highest quality setting (HQ Stereo) at all times but I only get just under 9 hours of recording time.

With all that said, if you do hold the recorder up on end, it does record well and it is very easy to move files off the recorder and onto your computer. Despite its microphone difficulties I have decided to keep the recorder and I do use it to record all of my classes. I'm very pleased with it.

I cannot comment on its music playing abilities since I have not used it as a player.

(That's just the English part of the Manual.) Yet, for all its features and operations, it has 3 major flaws which should be pointed out to any potential buyer of this product:

1. In this era of 60 Gigabyte I-Pods, a mere 512 Megabytes just doesn't cut it. The Manual blithely states that when you get a Memory Full message, just erase some "unnecessary files". Nothing to it. I wouldn't have minded paying a few additional bucks for some additional gigabytes of memory, which would have come in mighty handy. If the people at Olympus can cram in all those features into that little space, they should take a cue from Apple and pound in a few more gigabytes into their machine.

2. The feature that isn't mentioned in their advertising blurbs is that you only get six hours of playing time on one AAA battery. Not wanting to run to the drugstore every time I hear the machine slowing down, I spent an additional $50 on a Sony Battery Charger, and 4 Sony Rechargeable batteries. But hey, if the I-Pod can provide a built-in rechargeable battery, and if other devices provide an AC adapter, Olympus should at least take a peek at the competition and take pity on their customers.

3. In Voice mode, only the HQ (High Quality) mode sounds halfway decent. The Standard Play (SP) and Long Play (LP) recordings both sound like there is a dishwasher and mixmaster running in the background within a small vault, and it is very distracting. Also, while the Voice Recorder is in Conference Mode (versus Dictation Mode) the pickup isn't all that great.

In its favor, though, I have to say that when the Olympus WS-310M is working, with a fresh battery and in HQ mode, it is a joy to play with and listen to.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hisssssssss, August 8, 2006
This review is from: Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player (Office Product)
I bought this and returned it the same day. Static hiss is the problem. When recording in a silent room, the created file has a large amount of quite loud static/hiss. The voices were recorded quite well, but I found the amount of background hiss simply unacceptable. Very dissapointing as the recorder worked well otherwise. Note that I also used an Olympus ME51S microphone, the hiss was present whether it was used or not.

I have two of these devices, one for each teenager. They record well, although holding it while recording introduces extra noise. They function like any other USB thumbdrive and MP3 player as well, no problems there.
The big problem is that they use up batteries quick. One WS-310 uses a AAA battery every 6 hours, and I'm putting new Duracells in - rechargeables would run for less than half of that.
Really nice, but make sure you have lots of AAA cells, and carry extras with you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice recorder; flawed case design, February 20, 2007
This review is from: Olympus WS-310M 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player (Office Product)
I like this recorder. It is compact, has clear sound, and lots of nice accessories -- except for the darn battery cover, which keeps falling off. Clearly they have issues with this because the Olympus web site specifically sells battery covers for this model at $7.00 a piece. Except they are always out of stock. I called Olympus, got put on hold three times with different departments, only to be told they are out of stock. (Duh!!!! That's why I called; because the web site wouldn't let me order one!!!) They said they would send me one "when the part comes in." Still waiting and waiting and waiting. Really, folks -- how hard can it be to design a battery cover that stays on? Jeez! By the way, it *looks* as if the cover for the 300M would fit the 310M, except the cover would be silver instead of black. I don't care about the color, so I asked the parts department if the 300M cover fits the 310M. "No, that's a different model number" I was told. "I KNOW IT'S A DIFFERENT MODEL NUMBER," I replied. "Will it fit my recorder?" She said, "Duh...I dunno." Honestly, what a waste of time.

My wife and I have used this recoreder a lot over the past few months. The sound quality (in the high quality stereo setting) is amazing. Lectures are crystal clear, and vocal performance quality is great.

Look at your other options. The 331-M is less expensive and has more memory. It is a newer version.

This little gizmo is absolutely great! It does all the things I wanted it to & more. I use it for recording choral rehearsals, then downloading to my computer, & sending off files to other members of the chorus through email, or burning CDs. GREAT TOOL!!!!

If you are a music teacher, I recomend this item as a good tool for bringing some technology into the classroom. Though it was designed for speaking and taking note, this devise is good for recording music, both instrumental and choral. You can easily create practice tracks in WMA format and convert them on your home computer to MP3, allowing you to make practice CDs that will play in the students CD players. You can also use it to record different classes and compare where each group is in comparison to the others.

The MP3 funtion really helps with listening examples. The only downfall is that any MP3 you want to download onto the devise must be saved at the lowest bit-rate possible in order for them to play on this player. In otherwords, it will not sync with programs such as Rhapsody or iTunes. It syncs easily with Windows Media Player, but again, the files you want to play must be in the smallest bit-rate possible.

Overall, I rate this at 4 stars. I am a choral teacher, and I have used this product for my 7th and 8th grade choruses, and having the practice tracks on CD and available for download through and eboard for my students has really helped my students learn thier music for the concert.
